Is this vapor locking, bad pump, or something else?

So digging into this without even working on the pump yet. Selector valve works, the issue I think I see is they have put a bolt and clamp on the return from the fuel pump to the tanks and just has a line from tank to tank. I guess I need to find a photo of how the return line should be all plumbed together as the valve doesn't cover the return like it appears to on my 86.

So bed is off and it’s a bit of wtf.

There is a pull from each tank, then what I think should be the return is ran from tank to tank. The vent is done the same way.

Man I love these old trucks and the WTF stuff that is done to them.

Pretty sure the culprit is in this photo. The vent and returns are going from tank and nothing connects them to the return etc.

WHAT IN THE TARNATION?!

Did they think they would fill both tanks equally, tie the feed together, and then return the fuel and vapor to one tank and piggyback it over???!!!

You need to remove the plumbing to one tank for now, then in the future you can put a pollack valve in to motarize the switching.

The return on your pump has to be hooked up somewhere.
Wonder if its not T into the Feed line...

You need to get vented caps or a canister (canister is complex atm to setup so just get vented caps and axle vents and install in the vent line.

can you show me the selector valve, is it 3 port?
You need to get a 6 port valve and a new switch and wiring. research the topic in search if you want to do it. alternatively it can be done with 2 3 port valves like you have most likely but its complex and prone to issues but it would be cheaper/faster

So, it has the 3-port valve instead of the 6-port. Can't tell from the pics but this is what it should be.

LOL it is hooked right up to that line with the bolt in it. It was under some tape with some real winning connections for the valve power and tank level wires.

Yeah, it has a 3 port where it only handles the fuel. My 77 K10 project had the same setup, and I am trying to find where I put the lines when I took them off for a rear tank conversion. Currently I am going to drop the valve and all the wtf plumbing and just connect the passenger tank up while I work on it. Probably order the proper crossovers and six port as this is a 1 ton with 454 and that second tank will be very useful.

the switch on the dash will have to be changed too, so expect that its all gotta go, atm, just switch it to the right tank and leave there, then run some new Fuel hose that Meets SAE J30R14T1.

This is ultra low permeation fuel hose, I recommend it since youre gonna be running things youd like to keep the gas in the system lol

you need a 3 port sender for passenger tank too

prepare for a tank replacement if you cant get the lockring and sender to cooperate. youll need 1984+ fuel tank, filler, fill hose parts if you needed them So that means 1984 sender!

i forgot you had a 3 port tank sender already
If your gas gauge works you should be fine, but it looks like the tab for the ground may have broke on one of your tanks, you can modify something on it to reinstall the spade

little bit of cleanup work and just bypassed the chaos for now. Looking to get it in for a frame chop but cleaned up enough to drive to town to the shop and take it for a spin to see if it’s fixed or at a minimum different.

frame chop... dont shorten it ;(

if you do you need new gas tanks, so consider delaying it at least a bit because youd have to decide how you want to do things before you buy a bed etc etc

Filler hose is CUT by the way

The frame has already been chopped in the rear. Just enough to be missing the back bed mount/pad and enough missing a factory bumper won’t bolt up. I thought about seeing if the rear frame section off a C20 would work as welded back on but depending on how much is missing it could probably never be towed with. Looking at the receiver hitches the main bolt ups would be on the missing metal.

You could if the section is connected properly which would require specific welding on the face of the side, intermittent, over distance, and probably fishplating or some other methods

Its in the bumper bolt area. It could probably be done but not sure what it would look like currently. I need to take a trailer out and grab a longbed/frame I hauled out to the farm a while back that has an unmodified frame. I think its missing roughly 4" of the frame but not 100% sure yet.

So just an update on this as I finally got it back to a running state today. I let it idle for a while and drove it around the country block. The fuel filter is staying full now. My guess is the dead headed return was the overall issue. I wont know for sure until I get the bed back on it where I can take it for a highway spin and check.
