Intake Manifold Gasket R & R

I am going to start this thread to document my process of replacing the intake manifold gaskets on my '89 5.7L TBI.

Here's a list I got so far that I need to round up so far. There are a few things extra listed here I found I needed too, like the tensioner pulley just started to scream a little the past few days:

Thermostat and Gasket (195*)
Intake Manifold Gaskets with the rubber end pieces and Distributor Gasket
Tensioner Pulley
Valve Cover Gaskets
PCV Valve
3' of 5/8" Heater Hose
Distributor Cap and Rotor

Tools:

Tool Box
Makita power driver and charger
Scraper
Brake Kleen
Drain pan and empty jugs
Blankets
Step stool
Makita Work Light
Flare nut wrenches
Spare hose clamps

you gonna remove the egr? if not no need in it's gasket.

Also you need a 195 t-stat.

Buying them gasket by themselves aint gonna be cheap. I priced a set of center bolt vc gaskets the other day, $20 a pair the cheapest I saw, add that to the rest and it's gonna be more then a full set from northern.

Now an idea my old man had, not sure if it'd work, take the older style vc gaskets with the 4 outer holes, cut the "hump" off the inside of them, and rtv the bolt hole once on the VC and use the old style ones on the new style vc, not sure if it'd work or not, but as soon as I get my hands on some I'm gonna look into it.

Also if you got the cash and are going to do one anyways and have them off, might be time to look into an upper rad hose and the other heater hose. I bought a 5 ft. I think hose for like $6 local, and the uppers and lowers are only like $15 or less a piece, you could find some wherever you decide to get your parts from I'd bet.

You can make a air cleaner gasket out of cardboard, like a pop box or something. I just bought a mr. gasket air cleaner assembly for my 88 and it came with a square piece of cardboard with a bunch of circles cut out of it. NO lie. It has to be intended for base gasket.

I agree about the hoses, but it is out of my budget for now and they aren't to bad a shape, so I have to let it slide for now, and I can save that for when I do the radiator R & R. But I do want to do something with that heater hose going to the manifold.

Good tip for the air cleaner base gasket, and I forgot I have gasket material sheets in my garage I can use to make half these gaskets, all I realy need to buy is the valve cover and intake gaskets then. RockAuto has the rubber v/c gaskets for 13 bucks.

You are right, the thermostat is a 195*.

yea but add shipping to that and they are probably $20 or more.
