FYI!!! I think you should ride in a truck that is running 456's before you try to slam them.

I do have 456 gears in my truck and absolutly love them. I can get 14 MPG if I watch how I am driving, If I am loaded 18-24,000 then I drop to about 10-12 mpg but still have plenty of gear to pull it up the hills. As Far as the RPM's are concerned NO it is NOT terrable. At 65mph I turn 2800 rpm in OD when I tow in 3rd at 65 MPH i turn around 3300-3500 at 65 mph.

EDIT: some place I have the MPH=RPM's listed on hear of what my truck does with my 265R 70 17 tires. getting ready to go unhook the trailer so I will try to take some pictures of the gauges for proof and post them here later tonight.

:word:

lower RPMs do not equal better fuel economy. if that were true, we'd all be driving trucks with 700R4s, 2.56 gears, and the biggest DOT legal tire we could possibly fit.

I was gonna add, the low gears are good for guys with bigger tires, so they may not be good for WHEELMAN's truck, but they'd be a peach for one like mine

Those are overpriced by $500-$700. And I love my 4.56 gears in my dually, although it does have tires in the 35-36in range. I would love to have 4.56's in my '88 Burb too, with OD and 33's.

I think it depends on your locale. The OP is in Colorado and I'm sure there are a bunch of offroad clubs, Jeep clubs etc and D60/14b ff is a popular upgrade right now. Around here a SRW Dana 60 could go for $1,000 in better-than-good shape and if it's got a Detroit locker that puts it up closer to $1,500. The 14b ff is worth $150-$250, more if it's already set up for disk brakes. A Detroit locker in the 14b could put that up closer to the $600-$800 range. However you're always buying a pig in a poke with things like this. You would have to remove the covers and verify you're getting what you pay for, then you gotta hope the locker(s) aren't worn out and that the gears were set up properly. If everything is perfect and as advertised I could see the pair sell for $2,000 around here.

A couple years ago, sure. But right now, nobody is spending money.

As for the front "locker", if it's the stock military unit, it's a trac-loc or something like that. Lot's of guys have said it's nothing to write home about.

I was thinking it was about $500-$600 overpriced too, but after realizing it was Detroit Locker rear end and LSD front D60, Its probably more like $300-$400 overpriced. Most of the CUCV set ups are open D60 fronts.

You guys don't even want to know what I paid for my CUCV 14ff w 4.56, Detroit Locker and had a disc brake conversion on it.

Finally I found the pic. This is my CUCV 14b FF w 4.56 and DT Locker that had been converted to Disk brakes. I bought it for $150. The other one with springs and drum brakes, was a FREEBIE for hauling it off. Its an open diff 4.10 rear end.
