Since it's a flat tappet I wouldn't be rotating it anymore, usually one rotation is enough, you can wipe out a flat tappet cam doing that, probably wouldn't hurt to pull the pushrods and check them..

Oil flow..

I can't recall, are there oil port or galley plugs behind the cam gear? If there are, do they thread in or are they a cut plug? (Freeze plug style)

Factory are pressed plugs, usually converted to pipe plugs with a .035 hole to oil the chain like big blocks.

I'm wondering if he's got oil flow through one that should be restricted.

Don't matter as long as one don't fall out, I had one fall out once and pressure pretty much went to zero.

That's what I'm getting at. If he's having trouble building pressure to the top of the engine, I'm wondering if there's a leak into the timing cover at one of those plugs?

Possible but I doubt it, if one fell out he wouldn't have any pressure, since his priming tool is smaller than a distributor I'm leaning towards a leak there.

I wasn't aware the distributor shaft was used to seal oil passages. It seems like the last sbc I built, I primed it with an old screwdriver shaft chucked into a drill motor. I seem to recall plenty of flow to the rockers. But I could be misremembering too. It's been a dozen years or so.

That part on the bottom with the groove is part of the oil galley, and if it has a lot of clearance you have a leak, that's why you see some aftermarket distributors with 0-rings there., myself I don't see any harm in having a dribble there, it's just more oil on the distributor gear.
