Wanting to put a gooseneck set up on my 87, but not sure how to go about it. As you can see the flat bed definitely has a place for one and it's definitely built heavy, the plate inside the spot in the bed is at least 3/8" but but it's not directly over the axle and I'm wondering if the hitch needs to be directly bolted to the frame. What do I need here?

Just like with a 5th wheel, you don't want the ball directly over the axle. Its a stability thing, it should be slightly in front of the rear axle. You will probably need to weld in some additional steel beams and then weld in the hitch using something like this: https://www.etrailer.com/Gooseneck-Hitch/B-and-W/BWGNRK1500.html

The ball mount needs to be attached to the frame in some manner, not the bed.
