My new (To me) test run engine stand made it to the shop ..

This puppy gave me the foundation to make it more user friendly ...

Got this old Sea Ray boat that had a 454 BBC in it which I pulled out and the gauges also was removed which are going to find a home on the run test stand ..

Doing three grits to get to finish bore size .. 80, 280 and 400 ..
Then a few licks with a plateau hone will have the bores done ...

Soon to have the block done ..
Next is to nail down a stroker crankshaft ..

The choices are plenty ...
(cast iron, cast steel, forged steel, billet steel)

Key Factors & Choices
  • Material:
    • Cast Iron/Nodular Iron: Affordable, good for mild street use (up to ~400 HP).
    • Cast Steel: Stronger than iron, suitable for ~500 HP builds.
    • Forged Steel: The standard for serious street/strip, handling 600-1000+ HP, boosted, or nitrous applications.
    • Billet Steel: Top-tier strength for extreme racing, machined from a solid bar, most expensive.
  • Stroke Length (Common Stroker Options):
    • ~4.125" Stroke: Creates large displacement (e.g., 454ci from a 4.185" bore).
    • 4.250" Stroke: Popular for massive cubic inches (e.g., 468ci with a 4.250" bore).

    • This stroke was my choice .
    • Bore is now 4.330" (.080 over)

    • 4.375" Stroke: Common in aftermarket blocks like Dart.
    • Other Options: Available in shorter (3.760", 4.000") or longer (4.500", 4.625", 4.750") strokes for custom builds, especially with lightweight designs.
  • Balance:
    • Neutral Balance (Internal): Preferred; eliminates external weights for smoother operation and less vibration.
    • External Balance: Requires heavy counterweights on the balancer and flexplate/flywheel.
  • Brands (Among Others):

Recommendation
For a powerful street or race build, forged steel is the best material, and an internally balanced crank is ideal. Choose a stroke length that, with your chosen bore size, achieves your target displacement while ensuring adequate piston-to-block clearance (often requires aftermarket blocks like Dart or Brodix for very long strokes).

Forged steel is a bit overkill for this motor build ...
But would be my pick ... Got some shopping to do .. Yet to see what I will be using ??

Gone off the deep-end again .

I can blame Jay Leno for this one .. Lol

Wanted to install a badge of some sort on the tailgate just for a bit more dress.. Thought about using a chrome 4X4 from a late model truck/SUV ...
More pondering got me looking for something old and unique cause of the age of the truck, its old, this is where Jay comes in at ..

Was watching one of his videos, he was showcasing a car that he owns .. Kind of a rare one made by Dodge in the early fifties .. Two door station wagon with a 241 ci Hemi and a overdrive trans .. On the tailgate was a emblem that said V Eight, Overdrive .. Since my truck is now sporting a V-8 and a 4L85E ..

That is a cool looking emblem! The scripts back in the day, just had a design flair that you don't see anymore.... The last decent looking scripts were in the 90s IMO....

Got two more in the shop, both are factory stock with low miles .. One is a 1988 454 ci 2-bolt main, got a set of Gen VI Vortex heads for it ..
Bumps the compression up a point and flows really well ..

The other is a 2003 496 ci Gen VII ..
Wanting to sell those ..

Bueller, Bueller, Bueller ..

The chrome is showing it's age, checked on replating it ...
Sure would look good with new chrome, but I think I'll run it as is ..

This item is just for the looks ..
Really don't want to have $200 wrapped up in it ..

Going to paint the letters 'overdrive' after the black paint cures ..

Overkill ..

The manufactures claim that these parts can handle up to 1,500 horses .. !!

From other builds like this one, horse power is around 550 to 600+ ..

Should be safe enough with my ...
