Given that 90% of painting is surface prep, not product. Is the por15 worth the money over rustoleum? I have surface scale and normal lack of factory paint for a 87.
Opinions?

I've used both and had better luck with por-15. You need to get rid of any scale for either to work well. Use a chipping hammer, needle scaler and lots of elbow grease to prep.

On my 79 I am using Tamco's chassis black, cheaper than POR-15, catalyzed, easy to work with, UV resistant. POR-15 is some good stuff, BUT you cannot skip on the prep, use their degreaser and acid etch before application, and plan for a topcoat as it is not U/V resistant. Even though a frame is mostly hidden, it can still fade and will fade where light can get to it.

Core support painted with Tamco DTM Chassis black

Not the best picture, but if you look where the rocker is, the entire rocker box was prepped and painted with POR to protect it. This is on my friends 75 K5 that I am helping him on.

There is a fella near here who blasts and repaints semi trailer frames. He uses the POR 15 exclusively as a primer. Blasts, POR, then several topcoats of tractor enamel. Said he's seen them 10yrs later and its still sealed.

I use Rustoleum Rust Reformer. Its $75 a gallon but its the best rust converter I've ever tried. Its tannic acid based. The gallon jugs are the real stuff, the spray cans are just regular spray paint.

I wire wheeled my frame, clean with degreaser, sprayed with Rustoleum primer-sealer, then chassis black paint. all for under $100
it turned out fantastic.

I wire wheeled, power sprayed with water, then POR-15'd it. Looks great.
