i am going to change the fluid in my 1984 gmc sierra classic 2500. It has a th 400 transmission. How many quarts of fluid do I need for this job?

I check it before I change it,I measure what I take out. If it was correct before,it's correct now. Also I install a drain plug,drain and fill the transmission every oil change or every 3 months this year,than once a year your transmission will always have clean fluid.If you are going to put in a drain plug run a short self tapper into the pan from the bottom and let the pan drain as much as it will before you try to drop the pan. Another little trick for you take a garbage can lid and turn it upside down,most have a plug in the center you can pop out,if not drill a hole with a 3/4 paddle bit. Anyways an upside down garbage pail lid over your drain pan will catch just about any mess you can make dropping the pan.
