First TH350 Rebuild Attempt - Pump Gears Sheared Halfway Off - Kinda Stumped, Appreciate any help!

Hi All,
Been awhile since I've been on the site, but I am officially stumped. I just rebuilt my th350 long shaft using the sessions book. It all went well. When I started it up, it shifted very solidly into gear. Felt great. At this point I did realize I forgot to re-hook up the vaccum modulator on the engine side, but by the time I got home the tranny was smoked and it didn't matter.

Because of the lack of upshift (due to the modulator being disconnected) - I was manually putting around in first and second. I shifted into first gear, and it shifted hard. And then I started having intermittent power delivery.

The next day, I checked line pressure and I had nothing at idle. So, basically the pump was smoked.

I finally got into the transmission again to do a post-mortem, and the drive tangs on the inner gear are half sheared. Picture attached.

I used a VEGE reman converter off Summit's site. I am positive I had the converter fully seated - and I had to pull it forward quite a bit to bolt it onto the flexplate. The way this is sheared makes me think that the drive tangs were only partially engaged with the torque converter due to being too far forward.

I've found so many different things talking about shimming and stuff, and it just seems odd that this would need to be shimmed being a stock replacement converter. I measure the distance from the TC footpads to the end of the drive snout, its in spec. I am totally stumped, I would really appreciate any insight y'all have.

Correct converter was pulled out too far what you needed to do was measure how far away the converter was from the flex plate and add washers so that the space was 1/8 inch before pulling it forward. You're dealing with two rotating assembles that have end play and tolerance stack they will rarely have the correct spacing unless you're dealing with all new parts at both ends and even that isn't guaranteed.

Re-manufacturing a convertor involves cutting it open. When welding back together, you can get slight dimension differences.

Could the flexplate be on backwards?
Most likely the VEGE converter they are rebuilt converters buy the time you cut the stock shell open clean up the surfaces and weld them back together they are shorter and require spacers depending on cut width and material removed in clean up.

The old Summit branded ones were the same way. I had one that needed over 1/8" of spacer to get to 1/8" I sent it back and bought a new FTI that needed no spacers at all as it was a brand-new shell. Also, it had both bolt patterns so I could use all six bolt holes.
