Fun fact: When I took the axle shaft out to replace the seal the pumpkin cover had zero gasket or RTV on it....just metal to metal :bs:

I'll have to upload the video I took of that job....the carrier has carnage in it, like the pinion made contact somehow and scarred it all the way around.

If it were me, the transmission choice would come down to the axle ratio. If you have 4.11, totally go with automatic with od. It's already got the good ratio for it. If you have 3.73, I'm on the fence, but an automatic would still be good with 3.73, personally I'd leave it manual with 3.73. 3.07, run it as-is, that ratio would be fun as heck with a floor shifter.

That is wild.

I watched on my phone, no computer at home. Anyhow, around 1:33 in the video it looks numbers stamped on the ring gear. If someone with a bigger screen or has the ability to zoom in, maybe you can verify if those are stamped numbers.

Would it be permissible to use this knockout in the bottom of this Edelbrock open air cleaner? For my vent tube. Eventually, I would like to get a retro style, but this is what I have for now.

The pinion had walked into the carrier, due to bearing wear/failure or the pinion nut was not tight enough/crush sleeve issues allowing it to walk into the carrier.

As far as figuring out gear ratio without pulling the cover there are a few ways, one is if you have a tach, note rpm at a specific speed, then calculate based on tire size to determine the ratio.

Or, put in neutral, jack up one side if it is an open rear (the video above shows that it is), mark the tire and the pinion yoke and rotate the tire until the pinion makes one full revolution. You will need to divide the possible ratios by 2 to determine as the spider gears effectively half the ratio. So 4.11 would be just over 2 turns, 3.73 would be just under 2 turns, 3.07 would be about 1.5 turns, so on and so forth.

Next question, do I really want to use that and force all this crap down the carb, or is there a possible way to put it in the base of the carb that’s not vacuum. I need to look at this carburetor when I get home. Or, will they even be that much oil vapor once I get this lower vacuum PCV in? Lots of questions.

cleaning parts today....all that oil thats been blowing around the bay.

Went ahead and bough a new edelbrock cast aluminum timing cover, ARP bolts for that, the intake, the water neck, the water pump, the oil pan, oil pan spreaders, Fel pro timing gasket, edelbrock fitting for the air cleaner, 5/8 hose for that, some 5/16 fuel hose.

Got my new stainless wiper arms and blades installed last night. blades dont stay on the arms, will probably have to find different ones or modify them to make it work but they look nice

That's what it's designed for. I ran Mean Green like that from 1990 to 2005, no issues with the carb

Yours may have similar stampings on the ring gear.

I’ll have to check. One thing at a time! Went ahead and removed the timing cover and oil pan. Don’t think the oil pan was leaking at all, blue rubber FEL PRO did its job. The entire paper gasket on the timing chain cover was soaked through. I don’t know if that’s normal or not but I still don’t have a definitive answer on what was leaking. But after this, I shouldn’t have any more leaks from these surfaces.

Crazy the trouble I’m having to go through for this little 283 lol. I like this engine a lot and it’s a good running engine, but for once I want to do something stout so I think I’m going to next year. There’s a video on YouTube of a shop building a a 355 that dyno’d 480hp. They give you the entire build sheet so you can replicate it if you wish. I already have the 355, and it already has the flat top pistons and Vortech heads that they used. Would need some porting, flat tappet cam, etc., etc. but it’s really not an expensive build. Stock bottom end. I think I would go ahead and take mine all the way down and have everything went through at the machine shop and start fresh with new bearings and rings. I could probably plastic gauge it and throw new bearings in it without doing anything, sure they would egg shape a little but not enough to hurt anything. I would just rather have it super fresh.

Found a few small pieces of the push rod that broke in the bottom of the pan. There was a bigger piece in the valley up top, about an inch long, one of the ends. I’ve been cleaning surfaces and gaskets, repainting things, I think I may go ahead and prep and paint the frame rails and a lot of the stuff you can see anyway while half the crap is out of the engine bay.

There is a separate video showing all the part numbers they used, ran best on 94 octane they said in the comments
