With the two adjusting screws? They’re both at around 1-1/2 turns out right now since I haven’t been able to get timing set where it 100% needs to be and locked in. When I was setting the timing the other day I got it to 10° advanced but when I reconnect vac advance the truck ran worse, that was to full manifold, I should’ve just done it to ported.

If I get the engine casting numbers can someone chime in with some info on it? I’ve been reading how to decode but what I’m really needing to know is whether or not it’s flat tappet cam and I need to add zinc to the oil. I think I know enough to figure out the year of engine and the plant it’s from and possibly whether it’s a 2 or 4 bolt.

That block is Flint, June, 9th day, and that’s all I’ve got I don’t know the CEJ since that part varies, but what about the 87? Would it need zinc or not? Since the block is from a different truck and I don’t know what is and what isn’t 87 on the truck.
CEJ refers to it being a 305? From 78-82? Maybe?
The second sequence of numbers is Chevrolet, 1978, Janesville plant, and partial vin? Am I getting any of this info right?

yeah you sound right.
I believe the 9 in first numbr or 8 in second number are used to "check" the date of the engine code. so 78-82 is possible for CEJ, well it was a 78 or 79 based on the rest.

Also good point, I dont know how the roller/flat cam stuff inside the engine all works, like what goes into it, so thats an excellent question. maybe a worth taking intake off lmao. I believe the valley it would be obvious?

Not sure, I believe some blocks were set up for hydro roller cams but had flat tappet. And with the 87 being tbi I have no idea what’s actually inside it. I know the heads up is tbi stuff but the block is older. I don’t know if the cam is the tbi cam or older style cam. I don’t know if that matters I didn’t do it so I don’t know lol

405 posts and this Edelbrock 1405 carb is still a POS. It's best use would be a fishing sinker.

The trucks running decent right now, I’ll link the most recent video I have. I was setting the timing the other day and radiator started leaking I have a new one on the way, had an offer of 6k for the truck the other day. I need a new timing light to actually set it and get it good

This was after sitting a few days, it also shows the obnoxious exhaust leak on passenger side.

An 87 TBI engine would NOT have been roller from the factory. Any SBC could have been retrofit to roller at some point, the only way to know is to pull the intake or a valve cover and try to look at a lifter. You can usually pull a valve cover and look down into the valley through the pushrod holes. A factory roller block will have dogbones and spiders to keep the lifters from rotating. A retrofit roller setup will have tie bars between the two lifters for the same reason. I would highly doubt you have a roller motor.

So I should go ahead and add the zinc to both engines?

I did some more research, bex seems to be on point. Provisions / actually done. if its an earlier block, its not, if its original it wouldnt be, and it could even be a later tbi and still stands good chance its flat tappet

Alright I picked up 6 quarts of 5w-30 to change the oil on the ol k10 today and I’m going to add STP oil treatmeant(15 oz) when I change it. I may only use 5qt and the additive not positive yet. I may try to drain a little out of my 87 tbi and add the stop leak and zinc additive.

Just spent several hours cleaning the engine and I think I’ve came up with these two codes,
V020911 and 08S17323
Neither of these numbers have any correlation with the vin plate. I’m going to try and decipher what I can but someone, anyone, feel free to chime in.
Went back to the video I took and the set of numbers is- V0209TK7? And 08S157323? I can’t quite make out the last three of the first set. But the second set I’m pretty positive that’s what it says.

I’ve got Flint, February Ninth, I’m assuming my 11 part was a misread. I can’t figure out the other number yet.
