My last car that went all out was a 2006 Mercedes E class. Three ashtrays, three cig lighters. (Front center, one in each rear door.)

The Germans took smoking seriously at the turn in last century.

I am with that gentleman. I don't buy anything without an ashtray for the same reason. I have never smoked anything, but I don't like on board computers or sensors. The stuff with ashtrays I can mostly fix myself. As for my Square Body's, I usually install a cup holder where the ashtray was.

Just fine, as far as I know. The ashtrays and lighters are virginal.

Of course, as my grandfather used to say, "If one thing don't get you, somethin' else will."

But the real question is do all the lighters work?
I don’t even smoke but I think every vehicle should come with a smoker lighter.
First, because it seems like a god given right and a feature that should have never been removed…for posterity’s sake.
Also a good survival tool if you run out of gas in the back country and need to start a fire. It works.
And I did use the lighter in the old Jeep to light a couple M80s over the 4th. No matches or lighter? No problem…

I kept the actual full power lighter in my British project car (which they label as for cigars in the owners manual - it may even get used to spark up a celebratory one if I ever get it finished) but the original ash tray was long gone and at $90 or so for a reproduction one its a low priority. I also added a lower power secondary 12V port for other electronics since I was having to reconstruct pretty much all of the center panel section anyway.

In my squarebody I have a small underdash 1-to-3 12V splitter device to run electronics. It is mounted using already existing screws (so no modification or damage to the sheet metal). It plugs into the original lighter socket with the cord running up behind the dash and into the ash tray area, and since I don't smoke the actual heating element part just lives in the ash tray itself.

One thing to keep in mind especially in newer cars is that an actual lighter draws a lot of power and gets hot. Modern 12V accessory ports wouldn't easily swap over to a full power electric lighter unless you also run a thick gauge 15 amp fuse protected wire for it as well, and even then it could melt a plastic panel when being used. Old British cars and our sqaurebody trucks have nice metal panels where the lighter mounted, new vehicles for the most part don't.

My Mazda has a 12V lighter-style port, but its just in a plastic molded peice that wouldn't tolerate the heat of an actual lighter. In contrast, the big Lincoln town car I used to have had 5 lighters - one in each door's integral ashtray plus one in the front panel with the large ashtray. I expect pushing all 5 in at once would have blown up the alternator.....

We (ie GM Truck) have that, too.

We call it a "Muffin tin" ash tray.

I forgot about that. I think mine is still in the bag, under the back seat.

I had a 69 Buick Wildcat four door that cigarette lighters built into the back of the front seat for the rear passengers. Ashtrays were everywhere. I bet the fusible links would pop if all the cig lighters were going at once.

The car also had a legit thermostat instead of the normal cold to hot selection.. that thing was loaded
