I thought the 4.3 V6 was the 6 cylinder in 1985...

I was thinking so too. So the I6 isn't OEM most likely. If going i6, 292 would have sure been a better choice. Much more stroke = much more torque that I 4x4 needs. Still can't be bad though. Just going to be a sled off the start.

Just looked it up, K10 got the 4.3, K20/30 still got the 292.

That is interesting.... I wonder why GM did that??

That makes perfect sense to me. The 292 is a good 6 cyl for a 3/4 or 1 ton. Lots of torque for pulling in the 292. I'd imagine the the 292 probably has more torque than a V8 305.
