I wouldn't say "invest". They drop in value drastically, just like driving a new car off the dealer lot.
Thats no lie, Mine was around $4800 bux when I bought it back in 2005. Now I would be doing REALLY good to get 1200-1500 bux out of it.

Yea I got what he said that part of the business in auto repair. Start charging your customers $100-200 to hookup the scantool to there vehicle to see whats wrong. Thats how you get the money to update it.
Dave noone in there right mind would pay you 100-200 for diagnostics hook up, Hell I feel guilty charging ANYTHING. The computer diagnostics is included into my labor charge as long as I get the work todo after diagnostics I make money.

I'll probably end up going that route anyway. Probably have to spend around $1000 to get one that does brake/abs codes and brake bleeding in a bottom line scantool with limited features.

THE ONLY TIME YOU SHOULD CONSIDER BUYING YOUR OWN SCANNER IS IF YOU ARE WORKING FLAG TIME AND YOU HAVE LIMITED ACCESS TO A SCANNER BECAUSE OF OTHER TECHS USING IT WHEN YOU NEED IT.

I think he said he was going to put it on his student loan, which in essence is the same as going in debt. Too many people are too damned willing to sink their asses eyebrow deep in debt these days, then bitch and cry when they cant get out of it. You can lead a horse to water but you cant make the mother trucker drink!

Around here in my area they charge $100-200 just to hook up a scantool/diagnostics machine

I found 2 cheap scantools Napa made by Innox. One runs $300 and does ABS diagnostics but not OBDI. The 2nd one does OBDI & OBDII but not the ABS diagnostics

We charge $89 for scanner hookup and complete diagnostic (not just tell the customer what the codes are), but if they actually have us make the repairs then there is no $89 charge.

How dare you ask questions!!!! :slap:

Lol... Yeah!
