So I bought a 1979 GMC short bed step side 2wd last fall. 350 crate motor, turbo 400 with a 12 bolt.
After driving 300 miles home I did a big burnout and got the governor stuck. I replaced that and the modulator.
But now it seems to take 15-60 seconds to engage in gear. Fluid is full, clean and fresh.
It seems like the pump is losing its prime. Once it goes in gear it drives fine. Is my assumption of the pump being toast correct?
I’m getting ready to pull it for a freshening and just kinds looking for a heads up on what the real issue may be.

You are checking the fluid level with the engine running, with the shifter in park?

Drop the transmission pan. If the trans is cooked, that’s where you will find the debris.

Use 2 o-rings on the trans filter pickup tube. If your current tube has only one, use the old o ring off the original modulator. They are the same o ring.

Use a filter that has the brass screen filtering media. The cloth type filters being made now are entirely to restrictive. They can cause the trans to whine, especially when cold. Napa has the correct filter, it’s sometimes called the Allison filter.

If that doesn’t fix it, it’s probably worn out.

Thanks guys. Maybe I’ll try dropping the pan again and installing the Allison filter and double up the o ring first.
