I just replaced the column shift detent spring in my 76 c 10. With the key on, you can pull the lever all the way from park to L1. It changes gears, but no stops from park to L1 and back. Any clue what's broke or worn out?

It's hooked up. Truck runs fine and transmission shifts good. It just doesnt have any stops, you dont have to pull the shift lever towards you when changing gears, just move it up or down. With the key off, the column will lock it in park.

You have 2 forms of detents. 1 on the column, and the detent roller spring on the rooster tail in the transmission. You obviously have something or it would just fall to 1st. So I'd be leaning more toward the one on the column. IIRC, it's a piece of pot metal, not aluminum and it's probably broke. That would be my guess, and it's just that, a guess.

I've searched, but can't find the parts your talking about. I suspected something in the collum, but cant find the part. Do you have any views of it or a part number? Thanks.

Maybe you can understand these things better than me. See part 23.

Boy do I feel stupid. Explained to an old school mechanic about the problem I was having with my truck. He told me to bring my shift lever in so he could take a look at it. A quarter inch of the tip had broken off, and rubbing against the inside of the column when shifting, had worn it smooth. He pulled one out of a wreaked truck and gave it to me. Shifts perfectly now...just looks like hell. lol
