Are crate motors really cheaper?

Yes, thats the one I was looking at a while ago. I thought they suddenly jacked the price WAY up for some reason or discontinued it.

Seeing as your in Pepsiland(reno) you can save freight if they have it in stock at the Summit in Cocacolaville(sparks)

Haha your going to have to explain pepsiland.

I quickly understood Falabama (Fallon) and Ferntuckey (Fernley).

That Summit retail store is the ****, If I ordered that crate motor I would easily save hundreds.

In my experience, I would get the engine in Dhamp`s link for $1520...just for easy install, no headaches. And i remember reading that engine actually puts out over 205 when HotRod mag dynoe`d it.
Keep in mind, that $2500 one may have a cam in it for a car, and would no be well suited for a truck, And there`s a 95% chance that the GM block is machined to accept roller cam if you want it.

FYI, stock from the factory, you only had 165hp, and 285 ft lbs @1800 rpm

there's a 0% chance that the block is roller ready... its a 2 piece rear main seal.

I used to come up there for bowling tournaments, and to go to the air races...Most of the restaurants in reno only served Pepsi.....For Coke, you would have to go to sparks. You could get the 87-95 truck crate, but you would need a later manifold(or modify the center bolt holes) and a new flexplate.....hell, at that point, just get an L31.

I missed Hot August nights so I am going to check out the air races this year if I have time before Tuscon.

my 86 only replacement crate is roller ready. Thinking about the cam that they use in the HT383.

my crate was $80 to my door, and if you walk in you'd have to pay ~$90 in sales tax, but you'd also save the handling charge they put on every order. its really going to come out very close... i looked into going to Ohio and picking mine up, and decided to sit on the couch and wait for it.

and as for the engine being so much cheaper, you're forgetting the added expenses, say you tear into it and find bent rods, or a scored crank. maybe the heads are cracked... or worse the block. it can equal out real quick.

i've got a Ford 200 inline 6 on the stand in my shop right now, that was supposed to be a $1200 rebuild... its over $2000 with unexpected expenses.

Complete rotating assembly from Summit- New crank, rods, pistons, rings and bearings for a low price of: 546 bucks.

Complete felpro gasket set with freeze plugs from Rockauto- 58 bucks.

Brand new heads from Summit ready to bolt on- 618 bucks.

Camshaft and lifter kit on rock auto- 128 bucks

Everything new is going to be about the same price as a new crate motor to being with, only exception is more premium components inside.

I guess it would all come down to whats bad inside the engine, if you could re use the rods, crank and rebuild the heads it might be half the price.

The heads are the most expensive so far, how much money does it normally cost to have a pair of heads rebuilt?

^^this....it can add up very quickly with stuff you either don't think about or don't expect to be bad but is. :)

I might just try that, I was looking around the Tuscon craigslist and there was a GM dealer advertising engines for a discount.
