Holy Phuck. :mfr_omg: That will be good to print out and throw in my tool box. Is that in the library Retro?

Yah guys, whoever needs the chip let me know. I might try and use that list there of Retros to grab some more. I do want to send one to you Jim to get an econotune. After I get my hands on a phucking ALDL cable and BPEGR and we run some tests. :waytogo:

Thanks for the help guys.

I have a heated o2 on the car. Just need to wire the accessory power, and finish up a few other things. I'll update on the test results when they are in. Should be next week sometime.

Cool, there are a couple of shunts in the fuse block that are key powered, you could use a blad connector, and just tap into one of those, and run it out of a grommet in the firewall. then just ground the other wire to one of the bolt holes on the back of the head.

I will shoot ya one when I get a chance, gonna use a programmable chip, that doesnt require a UV light to erase.

After finishing the heated o2 sensor, putting a 195 deg thermostat in, and fixing a vacuum leak at the pcv hose I drove the truck to work and back today. It's about 55 miles round trip. No codes are flashing but the thing is missing and idling like junk now.

I also put a new egr on it and set the timing at 0*

Any ideas?

Pull the plugs and clean them...probably sooted up pretty good. Ohm test the wires too.

It's throwing a code 43 now. I fixed another vacuum leak and it seems to be idling a bit better when hot now. It's still a little lumpy though and it's only when in gear at a stop. It runs smooth while in motion. I know code 43 is linked to the esc/knock sensor - would a rattling pcv have anything to do with the issue? I just replaced the pcv to tb hose so I know it's not leaking...

I also hooked up a vacuum gauge and the needle is steady at about 17, but drops 1 inch for a few and then it seems like the engine corrects itself and it will go back up. It will do this for some time and then every once and a while it will drop down to 15 for a few seconds and sound like it's choking out and then correct again back up to 17.

I haven't tried yet, but does it make a difference to check vacuum with the est unplugged? When the est is unplugged it definitely runs rougher. (realized this when I timed it the other day)

Just throwing more info out there to see if these symptoms have a common thread.

Code 43 for the Knock Sensor is set when one of several things happen.
On that wire you checked for connection from sensor to PCM
(ECM is technically the man tran one) the PCM is looking for 2.5v.
That tell it the sensor is connected. If knock is present, an AC voltage
will "float" on top of that base DC voltage. IF the PCM does not see 2.5vDC
or see an AC it will set lite and code, and here is the good part,
above about 900 rpm it will start to retard timing to compensate.
So idle is not effected.

A third case of code comes from it doing a self test under load,
looking for particular results with timing shifts, not happy and code sets.

Recomend you check for 2.5v on the sensor wire. Use a very good meter,
or expect that your voltage will be read wrong (high impedance circuit).
You should also ohm the sensor while still installed.
Remove lead and ohm to engine and do again to battery ground lug.
You want to see about 3,900 (4k) ohms in both cases.
You want to know the sensor is good,
and so is the connection through it and block.

Do reset/clear the code after testing because the PCM will continue
to act on old code. Just pull the "ECM-B" fuse for a min with key off.

So bare with me as I'm not an expert with testing sensors etc.

I tested the sensor wire and it's getting 6.4 volts. (I edited this from earlier)

I tested ohms from the sensor wire terminal to the sensor base - infinite reading. I ran a wire to the batter neg terminal and got the same reading. My gauge just reads a 1.00

I picked up a sensor from the store today so that I could see the difference between old and new. The Ohms still tested 1.0 So given the fact that a lot of the other things on this truck are falling apart, I went ahead and replaced it. Started the truck and no SES. Drove around for a bit and warmed it up still no SES. I'm going to assume the old sensor is junk now.

I'm not really pro on just replacing things without a good indication that it's junk though so....where did I go wrong on testing the sensor?

I have a quick update. The reason that I started this thread was because my truck wouldn't pass emissions. I am now happy to say that at 17:24 tonight, my car is a legal beagle. Passed with flying colors!

Thank you for the help, it is very much appreciated.
