Hey guys,
Just curious what the approximate cost would be to rebuild a 700R4 transmission? I got a quote for $2300 and feel that's a bit high. That was for removal, rebuild and reinstall.

Thanks

Mine was around 2100 for the same work. Also upgrade the internals.

That’s probably not too far out of line. I would be curious to know what is included in that price. I’m guessing that 2300 bucks is probably a worst case scenario, they probably quote high planning on covering the cost of a damaged pump, burnt up planetary gears, etc. stuff that can’t be examined without a autopsy. My question would be what happens to the estimate if nothing is damaged that can’t be fixed with a overhaul?

There is a lot of labor in removing a transmission, cleaning/inspection/refurbishing parts, reassembly, adjusting clearences, endplay, the list goes on. I probably spend 6-7 hours to assemble a 700, time is money.

My local shop will charge around $1K for R&R labor alone.

Overhauls are around $1K, more if hard parts are replaced.

My area is probably a bit high for pricing. But the full service and upgrading. Was $3600.00. This was towing the complete truck in and just throwing money at them when my front pump took a ****.

Is this a stock rebuild or are there upgrades? What kind of warranty?

You can get your hands on a Monster or Performa Built trans for about the same money. Not sure if you can install it yourself and retain warranty though.

Thanks guys. Truck is bone stock; the rebuilt transmission would have a two year 24k mile warranty.

Stay away from Monster. They have done a excellent job of marketing, in my opinion some of that effort should have gone to customer support.

I have built 3 “monster in a box” transmissions, they are nothing more than repackaged overhaul kits and shift kits. Do a little research on your own and buy the parts YOU need, not what monster thinks you need, or has in stock.

If anyone is interested, I’ll share my monster transmission stories.

I paid $400 to have mine rebuilt. I bought the kit I wanted and a few extra parts, and paid the builder for a couple of parts. I have around $675 in mine. I removed it myself and will install myself went I put the new motor in.

So dumb question that has me scratching my head...….

With the truck cold the fluid on the dipstick shows at the level of "Hot and in Park" but while the truck is up to temp and running next to nothing shows on the dipstick. It makes me thing the tranny is low on fluid while running but makes no sense while its cold?

Cold with engine running? Or cold with engine off?

My 2000 camaro ss T56 cost me $1,800 r and r 2 new forks and rev gear. New bearings too.

My 05 Dakota's auto transmission r and r rebuilt cost me $3,300 they came and picked it up and towed it back to Houston to their shop.

Guess there's a price difference between the manual and auto transmission rebuild.

Fluid level need to be checked with the trans hot, engine idling, and in park. If you check it cold with the engine off it will show over full, the converter has drained into the pan

Man, it's only like $800 to have one rebuilt around where I live (not including removal).
