700r4 id code like no other

Hi new to forum. I cant identify the 700r4 in my truck. Its an 86 k10 suburban silverado edition. I cant find anything online that even begins to decode the id number. Anyone help? Code looks like CGF796226. This is on the id plate on the back of the trans on the p-side. Cleaned it up best i can. Its still in the truck and its pretty hard to get to. Thats the whole code on the plate.

I think you're looking at a partial vin number. the last three numbers should match your vin on the dash.

That's on an actual plate? That's not the #'s you should be looking for to ID the transmission then. There should be #'s directly on the trans case itself. Have you seen the 700r4 Trans ID thread? How about a pic of the passenger side of the trans? Is there fluid taps on the passenger side of the trans? That will determine if it's an early case or later case for sure.

Your number is a partial VIN. The eighth digit from the end is a G which tells us that you definitely have an 86 transmission in your truck.

The ID numbers you need are on a tag glued to the top of the transmission. Part of that same information is stamped on the pan rail on the side of the transmission. Even if you have that information, good luck in decoding it into something that you can use.

In general Chevy style 700s can be broken down into 3 groups.

1) 1984 thru mid-1984: Non-auxiliary valve body with small weak 27-spline inputs. Inputs & pumps should ALWAYS be upgraded to 30 splines when transmission is rebuilt.

2) Mid-1984 thru mid-1986: Non-auxiliary valve body with stronger 30-spline inputs.

3) Mid-1986 thru 1993: Auxiliary valve body with stronger 30-spline inputs.

S10 style 700s break down the same EXCEPT they ALL have 27 input splines.
