I gotta  this one.

And don't forget, you'll need to retrofit a Throttle Position Sensor to your Carb or Throttle Body.

What about getting the plugs and wiring out of the firewall ?

there are two plugs on the transmission, you will have to snake it through

also as hotrod stated you will need a TPS

I put a 4l80/205 in my 90 crew

in my 90 crew cab build thread I have info on how to convert the 4l80 to bolt a 205 to it and how to put a vss in a 205

I rebuilt my 4l80 and updated it with a transgo hd2 shift kit and some other goodies.

Did you have a write up on this project, or just include it in your truck build thread? What's cool about this too, is it used the much more common and cheaper to find Racetrack pattern NP205. How does the Tcase shifter fit in relation to the seat? Pretty tight I'd imagine huh???

Duh, now I see it's in your 90 Build Thread.

How would you retrofit a 4 barrel carb ?

I found a website last week that showed a pic of the sensor on a carb. I cannot remember where I found it, but what I recall seeing, it hooked up where the throttle cable attaches.

That is some good info Kleedus, thanks. I was just going to add new fluid to the trans I buy, but the more I have thought about, I think it would be a good idea to rebuild it. I don't have a garage, but do have a small room I can use. How much room is needed to do the rebuild? How much time is involved? Tools needed? I need to locate the service manual for a 4L80e and get an idea of what I'm up against.

you will need a clutch compressor I made my own.

the Teflon rings need a special tool I had a buddy that had the tools I could use.

it took me awhile as I was learning as I went

I rebuilt mine in my living room all the parts were cleaned before I brought them in

if the fluid looks good red or pink I would just put new input and output seals and a new pan seal and run it. but if its brown I would rebuild it

what year is the tranny you got 91-96 or 97-up

91-96 will have the cooler lines together 97-up one will be separated towards the middle of the tranny. the tag riveted to the side will also say the year

Being a bachelor I could do the rebuild in my living room and spread it out to my dining room, but I would rather do it out in the storage/work room off the patio to keep any dog hairs out of it. Out there I have three work surfaces so that should be sufficient.

The trans is coming out a 95 3500 w/5.7, with what they say has 56,000 miles on it. The fluid will tell the story about that though.

My Pop may have the tools I need to it since he was a professional mechanic for 40 years and has a lot of specialty tools. Some he bought, some he made, and some of my grandpa's. If I'm lucky he would let me do it in his shop at their house, but him and mom are cantankerous about stuff like that. I will ask though, and deal with whatever answer I get. He will let me use the tools either way.

Even with the book I will be learning as I go too. It will be the first time I have ever looked inside a transmission. Not just an automatic, any transmission period.

that atsg manual will cover that tranny well I would buy it if I were you even if you do not rebuild it its good info to have.

I have rebuilt manual trannies and t- cases before

automatics have kicked my ass for years I tried to change a pump in a th350 when I was 17 I messed something up in that one.

I tried to piece together a different 4x4 th350 from 3 trannies 1 was rebuilt but cracked the case it was 2 wheel dive the others were 4x4s and It ended up kicking my ass that was when I was 20.
after that I never tore apart another auto until the 4l80. I am 38 now and have had a lot more experience and have more patience now.

if the fluid looks good I would just change the seals and filter and run it

$28 for the manual is a good buy.

The weekend and bills left me short to get the transmission today, so I paid $150 to secure it so I can pick it up on Friday. I asked if it had the dipstick and tube, so the guy invited me back to see it. No dipstick tube...sumbitch....where to get one...it supposedly came from the truck...wtf...just another expense I guess. Externally it looked good, but that means nothing. Need to get it home to inspect it.

Holley makes a kit to put a tps on their carbs, but I didn't find anything for Edelbrock carbs. Places that sell OD trans conversions "might" have kits for other carbs, BowTie Overdrives for example.

I am learning that it can be done way cheaper the more I investigate.

Hey @1low4x4, how far did you move your crossmember back when you swapped in the 4L80E? And did you use the TH400 mount, or did you have to use a different mount? I read through your build thread yesterday because I recalled you doing this swap, and I could get used to 14 mpg compared to the 8 mpg I was getting before. That is a 75% increase in mileage. Also, were you able to use the TH400 flexplate? I heard you can, but want to make sure so I know what parts to get.

Sorry, I'm just finding out about this tagging thing. I can't remember how much I moved it but I could go measure. I had to buy the 4l80e mount and I did use the same flex plate.

Yes, please measure. Your red truck and my truck are almost identical from the factory. Same engine displacement, same tranny, same rearend gears, long bed, etc. Red is just 4 years newer.
