I was wondering that too. I am assuming it just needs power and a good ground, a secure spot mounted somewhere under the hood, and you're off and running. What research I've done, you can buy a programmable controller for $800+ and you can adjust shift points, shift firmness, and other parameters to really fine tune it to your liking. I rode in a couple trucks with this transmission behind a 350 and was pleased with the factory setup, so I am going that route. If I get a wild hair and some extra cash, I may get one of those programmable units later on. Right now I am striving to keep the swap around $1,500.

yes the tci one is 800on summits and you can adjust all shift points, its all plug and play, so ask yourself is it worth an extra 700bucks

to be honest with you I really don't know, what I do know is there is a stand alone computer behind the dash that has 50 wires on it, half go to one plug other half go to the other plug both on the transmission

I learned this because I planed on doing a 4l80e swap and now I have a 5speed, so go ahead ask me anything about a nv4500:flipthebird:

Any idea as to how difficult this would be to remove from a junker ?

After paying bills, I had enough left over to get the transmission. :rocking: Just called the salvage yard, the transmission is still on the truck, they will have it ready for pick up by Monday!!! First big purchase for this swap will be done, then payday next Friday I can get the torque converter. Just need a little more info about the swap, and the controller, and I am good to go.

Just something to think about before you buy that used converter. Pull the trans pan and see if there is any significant pieces of clutch material in the bottom of the pan. If there is I'd suggest skipping getting the converter, as it will also have material in it, and would need to be flushed before use. If you can swing it consider installing the Transgo shift kit, it corrects a few items that increase the torque capacity and life of the trans. I have bought 2 of these 4L80e trans locally and one had excessive wear to the center support and had to be replaced. I had a guy rebuild mine for about $850 with a converter and I supplied the TransStar kit. FYI, Summit will price match an items price from any other vendor, that's how I got my TCI computer for less than Summit had advertised. Best of luck with the swap.

Thanks for the tips MetalTech. I will be using a different torque converter, not the one with the trans now.

I bought a service manual and a core 4l80 and jumped into my first tranny rebuild.

I researched upgrades and updates for the 4l80 and problem areas that needed fixed.

I used the transgo h-d2 kit it was pretty easy to install

I used alto red eagle clutches with kolene steels

How much did all that cost? I'm on a single income and can't afford big purchases. I just happened to have some extra cash in the account from the camping trip because we didn't take the truck and saved a few hundred in fuel costs. So that cash is going towards getting the trans.

I probably spent over 2 grand in all on my tranny with all the updated and rebuild parts shift kit and converter. bought most of the parts on ebay over a couple months

this is the manual I bought its a pretty good one but it does not cover the 97up 4l80 very good. I think it was wrote previos to 97.

I was cursed by automatic transmissions the were my arch enemy before my 4l80 build. it was actually pretty easy.

I don't even remember what all I done to it. I just researched 4l80 rebuild on the web and found problem areas and how to fix them
