I have been trying to think of the most cost effective way to get better gearing for improved highway mileage. Today I did a search for a 4L80 transmission and found one within an hour drive of here. They are asking $1,200 for it. Is that a decent price for a transmission they claim is low mileage? It looks clean and has the torque converter with it too.

I just did a quick search on ebay there are rebuilt 4l80's listed cheaper than that with free shipping.

I would not pay over 500 for a used tranny any more than that you might as well just get a rebuilt one.

I thought it was too expensive for a used trans.

what are you going to do about a computer?

I found there are stand-alone controllers for non-computer-controlled applications like our squares.

Yep, Diesels used them up to 1993 or 1994 I believe.

I need to go check the diesel in the local U-Pull-It. May be an automatic. Not sure if I want to pull it though, gets above 90 by 9AM and that isn't good junkyarding weather for me really.

The diesels used a standalone controller?

That sounds like the weather here. Doesn't cool down, if you can even call it cooling down, until about 4am.

I got the rockers for my truck and wanted to work on it after work today. But triple digit temps, and the sun beating down on the area to do the work, nah, no thanks, I will find something else to do.

It would be nice to get as much info as possible about putting a 4L80 into our old squares onto this thread. This really is the ideal conversion.

I did not know anything about the diesel stand alone setup.?

What is it ? how does it work ? Where do we get them ? How do we hook it up ?

I think a lot of guys would do this conversion if we knew more about what exactly is involved.

I contacted Jakes in Texas to get an idea of price for a rebuilt trans w/controller and a lockup converter. They said the converter will bolt up to the th400 flexplate. For the trans, controller and lockup converter it would cost $3550 plus $150 for shipping. The trans is longer than the th400 so the driveshaft needs shortened, and the cross member needs to be relocated.

That is all I know at this point. I am going to investigate getting a rebuilt one from ebay, and try to locate a controller. Any savings will go towards shortening the driveshaft.

Depending on how much longer, it may be ideal for lifted trucks needing drive shaft lengthening.

I actually discovered it 20 years ago. I put a brand new 4L80E in a 1977 Pontiac with a standalone ECM from a diesel and an adapter plate for the 455.

It really isn't hard as long as you have the complete harness and ECM. If you have a cable speedo, you would need to get an adapter. I think there's a thread in the library about the ECM needed.

Wall I already have a 90' 241c with the electronic pulse speedo setup. Just have not gotten around to converting it back to cable yet.

So is there any more info about this stand alone unit besides what to get it out of ?

Can you hook it up to an 86 and earlier block ?

I put a 4l80/205 in my 90 crew

in my 90 crew cab build thread I have info on how to convert the 4l80 to bolt a 205 to it and how to put a vss in a 205

I rebuilt my 4l80 and updated it with a transgo hd2 shift kit and some other goodies.
