I’m soooo close to starting the 406 crate engine I purchased last year and I’m running into a silly but frustrating problem: the dipstick that came with my block cannot be the right dipstick. Why do I say this: so the block has a drivers side dipstick that goes through the block (which is a pain in and of itself with the brake booster) and when I reinstalled the dipstick tube, I could hear the dipstick bottoming out on the bottom of the 7 quart oil pan I have before it was even seated in the tube. I measured the dipstick and its 22” long. The frustrating part is, I can’t really get a straight answer on what I need as far as a dipstick goes for that engine, some sites say it’s universal for all sbc blocks, and some say it will be marked differently for a 400. All I know is that the dipstick should not be bottoming out on a deep oil pan before it’s even seated. Help!
