They were all Inline 6's huh??? Even in the 60's all I have seen is I6 in front of a 3 speed manual. The 283's got SM435 (IIRC) Granny 4 speed.

Yeah, all of them I've seen were originally 6cyl trucks I think.

in the 60's they were common with 283,327 and the inline 6

my 63 was a 283 three on the tree

the only 3 speed od tranny i ever seen was in a 82 dodge with a slant 6 and it was a week tranny

Really, I had many, like 5 or 6 dodges with that setup and never had a trans problem. I did have one with a slant six and a factory 5 spd OD man trans, floor shifted, that was nice. :)

Squares could have a 3 on the tree up to 1987. I think 1986 was the last year for a V8 with the 3 on the tree.

[edit]Okay, 1986 was the last year for a 305/3 on the tree.

I wonder if that was the original motor. I've never seen a V8 in front a 3 speed manual.

Hotrod, I am with you. The last time I remember a V8 with a 3 on the tree from the factory was in the late 60s. I have seen several over the years but they were not factory.

Seriously?

Even GTOs could have a 3 speed manual, that was the standard trans. and certainly no GTO came with a 6. Granted it's not a truck.:Moon:

My dad's 66 C10 got stuck in reverse today. He said for the last year it has needed a little tug to get it out of reverse, but now it won't come out at all. The shifter and linkage still move freely so we are guessing it's the tranny. Is it maybe possible the linkage is just worn and let the tranny get in a bind? Any way to fix it without pulling the tranny? I'm not even sure what gearbox it is, but I'd assume it's the same as what was found in the 3 on the tree square bodies.

Andy,
Did ya ever get the thing out of reverse?
I had a problem with my old truck, had to remove all the linkage from the trany and then take it out of reverse.
the column was bad,
Took it apart and replaced some parts inside from a auto column and it was good to go! Call me if ya want.

I think we are going to mess with it this weekend, hopefully it's just something with the column. It doesn't really feel like it though... we'll see and I'll report back.

Honestly, it might be easier to fix the trans than the column.

So, it's been well over two years now and we finally took a look at what might be wrong with the truck. We had it fixed in 2 minutes. Seriously.

Turns out it's just sloppy levers on the column's end. Just popped everything back in place with a screwdriver. The truck literally started right up after sitting that long, didn't need a jump or anything. Took it for a quick drive and everything.

I had a '61 with 3 on the tree, Muncie SM318 I think the trans is. I always loved it because you could carry 2nd gear nearly to 70 mph in a long-winding 6 cylinder.
