I stopped and looked at a SB for sale today. C20, 292ci, 3sp man. What is the bolt pattern for the tranny on these engines? A little research shows they have the same pattern as the TH autos. Is this correct?

I can't help but think it would be cool to toss a T-5 from an f-body behind it for the OD, and see what kind of mileage I could get with it, if I were to buy it of course.

Is a swap like this possible? Besides the other issues such as mechanical or hydraulic linkage and possible starter and exhaust clearance, is it physically possible?

As far as mileage 292 ci is equal to 4.8 liter so I wouldn't really expect it to be a gas sipper.

They don't get good mpg at all, but that's not what they were for. They produced a bunch of torque down low and they are bullet proof.

A T5 does not handle torque very well, that 292 would kill it.

Tremec t-56 would be better, NV4500 would be best. That engine may get pretty good mileage with the use of OD.
Od might put the engine in its sweet spot while cruising, depending on rear gearing.
Bolt pattern is the same as the v-8's

I figured since they put the T5 behind a 290 ft/lbs V8, it could probably handle a 215 ft/lbs I6. I really just wanted to know if it would bolt up to the transmissions the V8's do. There is a whole world of possibilities out there.

Gearing would be optimized for the use it would see. A five speed I'm thinking 3.42, six speed you could go 4.10 so you can actually use 6th gear. Mid to high teens is all I would really expect as far as MPG's go. I don't have my head in the clouds looking for mid 20's or something like that. It's all talk anyway! Just bouncing around ideas I have in my head!

My first car was a '64 El Camino with the 230/3sp on the column combo. After I grew tired of the sloppy shifting I dropped in a TH350. It was a simple install, even the driveline was already the correct length. Pretty amazing considering the TH350 wasn't produced until five years after the car was built.

Wished I had done it sooner, that auto trans really helped the stoplight to stoplight times.

The T5 is not very durable behind a TPI 305 if you tend to beat on it. A T5 in a heavy truck is like beating on it wherever you go. However, the install would be very simple since the T5 bolts right up to the truck bellhousing. You just need to get the parts from a donor truck and bolt in the T5. I'm not sure where exactly the shifter would poke through the floor.

You sure about that? My freeway RPM's dropped a good bit lower when I swapped in the T56.

I have never owned anything with a T5, so you are probably right about the durability.

This is a theory discussion now from my end. Wife gave me "that" look and said no I can not buy it. Just the dreaming part of things like this is what I love. Thanks for all the good info guys.

Dunno. It was supposed to be from a '96 I think.
