So I bought this 1964 Chevy stepside in Arkansas about five hours away a couple of months ago for $1200. I think I may find another cab, it’s going to take a lot of work on the bottom half to get this one right. The front clip is not in great shape, but I think the doors and especially the hood are great. The stepside bed is not my first choice because I prefer a Fleetside but it’s in really good condition.

My first truck was a 1964 GMC suburban, turquoise and white and I’ve been trying to replicate that feeling ever since. I’ve had several 60s models projects but never finished one. Since I just finished my brothers square body I’m getting started on this one.

The other day I took the body half of the chassis. The chassis is in great condition. This truck must have leaked oil and fluid from every possible spot for it’s life, and they lived on a dirt road. Gobs of grease and dirt covered everything and really saved the steel. I really like the coil spring and trailing arm rear end.

I have a square body front crossmember, I’m going to use the A arms and brakes off of it. I think I’m going to go with a 3/5 drop, I will be buying 3 inch drop spindles and drop springs for the back. All new suspension parts, ball joints, tie rods, bushings, etc.

I haven’t decided how I am going to finish the chassis. I could have it sandblasted, and then I could paint it myself. I could have it powder coated, but I probably don’t have the money. I could do like I did my K10 several years ago and do POR 15 although that stuff fades overtime. I don’t know yet.

The plan is LS drivetrain, air-conditioning, power steering, not sure what color I will paint it, but I think I’m going to have my company logo hand painted on the doors, and use it as my service truck. I am a master electrician, solo these days, and I would love to sell my 2021 Silverado and get rid of that note. I had a 2020 GMC Denali Dually last year that I was paying 1200 a month on, I traded it in on this halfton long bed 5.3 truck with 15,000 miles and the note is still $600. I would rather ride in style while still being comfortable and dependable without a truck note.

So that’s it. First I will build up the chassis, then I will source my drivetrain. I would really like a 6.0 with a 4L80 combo. I would like to give it some lope, but I don’t want it too loud and obnoxious. Then I will work on the body and get it all back together. I’ll be posting whatever updates I have here.

This truck was last registered in 1997. It’s been repainted at least three times, and there is massive amounts of Bondo on the cab. You can tell it’s old-school by the purple window tint and the sticker of Calvin pissing on Ford lol.

That's awesome. I'm really excited to see what happens next. Good luck with the cab and the whole project.

I got the squarebody crossmember and the 64 crossmember apart, I’m goin to use the 64 crossmember with the square upper and lower controls arms. Planning on 3” drop spindles.

Haven’t really done much, work slow so not a lot of dough. Today I welded up a cracked core support mount on the frame and beat a bed mount back into shape. Removed the trans cross and shift linkage won’t need that.

Thinking 6.0/4L80e and 7875 turbo.

That is a major piece of structure for the frame that you removed, are you planning to rebuild something to replace it?

work been slow so I built me a gantry crane to lift big stuff like the cab and bed on this truck. Best part is I didn’t have to buy a thing. Used wheels off one of my work scaffolds lol. 12’ tall may have been a little overkill but hey. Need to go to the pawn shop and find a chain fall.

This is what I want the truck to look like but the red/pink it is now. I’m going to try to repair all rust and spot spray back with a close color, doesn’t have to be perfect, but I like the overall look of the truck. And I won’t have to worry about messing it up. Sort of state of the art chassis (on a budget lol) and **** body if you will
