I've been trying to diagnose the wiper issue. I can get the wiper motor to work by grounding the right terminal at the motor connector. So, it looks like it may be the switch. I've removed it and found a lot of corrosion on the switch terminals. I cleaned them and reconnected it. Nothing. I sanded down the mounting points and reconnected and it still doesn't work. Assuming it's the switch, I have a dilemma.

I can buy a switch for a 73-74, a 78-83 and 84-87. However, I can't find a new one for a 76. None of the salvage yards within 50 miles have a 75, 76 or 77 truck. Can't find the part on ebay.

What are my options?

For model years 1975 - 77, I show the wiper switch as common to all C/K 1,2 & 3 - as well as the Blazer/Jimmy group. Note the only switch available was for "exc. intermittent w/s wiper system". That is true for 75/76. But it's wrong for 77 because intermittent wipers were made available for the first time in the 1977 model year.

Anyway, as you can see, the part number (1994172) for a non-pulse wiper switch is the same for years 75-77.

Thing is - they are really expensive. Every one I saw was like $85.

Thank you for the information. I've already started reaching out to them. I'm within 75 miles from Modern Chevrolet so I might be able to pick it up.

Has anyone been successful using an aftermarket switch on one of these trucks? I see the round knob type with the wiper decal on the front and blade terminals coming out the back.

If you are willing to slightly trim out the opening for a larger GM switch I offer OEM pulse/delay conversion kits using a 1978-up motor for use on 73-77 trucks. I include color coded leads and a diagram detailing how to install my harness leads in your dash. My kits are $125 shipped and include the delay switch and wiring. Mods you need to do:

1.) Swap out your motor for a 1978-up style from any parts store.

2.) Enlarge your wiper switch opening about an 1/8 inch all around to fit the GM delay switch.

My kits feature a used but cleaned and tested delay switch. They are obsolete from GM so they are only available used and I have several kits as of right now. My kit replaces your dash switch and wiring as well as your existing firewall wiring to your old motor.

Would I just need to replace the motor or would I need to replace the rest of the mechanism too?

Do you have a picture of the dash with the switch installed?

Thanks...

You only need to source (junkyard) the motor to linkage arm piece that bolts to the back of the motor itself-nothing else. I haven't got to the dash switch install just yet-this truck had manual Windows/locks and I'm in the process of converting this 77 GMC to factory power windows, locks and 1991 Suburban power mirrors. I'm building a dedicated all in one harness for it so I'll be getting to the wiper switch install soon enough....
