Can't find a part # on the carrier anywhere? IIRC the difference is the thickness of the flange that the ring gear bolts to. Pretty sure that's the cut off point. 4.10 and down numerically, and 4.56 and up numerically.

That is a 4.10 carrier and down carrier. Good for 4.10's, 3.73's 3.21's and I think there is someone who now makes an aftermarket 3.42 for it too. Also think there is aftermarket THICK 4.56's that will work too.

Here is a pic of a 4.56 up carrier without the ring gear part # 3977841, and a 4.10 and down carrier with 3.73's on it. The 4.56 up carrier is thicker, moving the ring gear closer to the pinion gear. If you can find THICK 4.56 gears, they're probably made for the 4.10 carrier, being they are thicker to compensate moving the teeth toward the pinion.

Just don't forget the locker. :waytogo:

BTW, the lockers won't matter. They'll fit either the 4.10 or the 4.56 carriers being they are split carriers.

Yep, That's a brand new unit right there. :waytogo: I got mine out of a CUCV axle with 4.56's and putting in my my 4.10 axle for the K10 conversion to K20 axles. That's how I had pictures or both carriers. I sold that 4.56 carrier on ebay for a small chunk some time ago. You'll have a real nice set up when done.

Old post. I'm hoping @HotRodPC sees this. You say the lockers don't matter? Suppose I want to remove my locker (Detroit) and revert it back to an open diff. What parts must be changed to do that?

Everything INSIDE the carrier. The Detroit replaces all of the open diff parts - the cross, spider gears and "shims" on the backside of the spider gears.

When removing the locker, get some hardware to hold the locker together when you split the carrier. A long bolt or all thread with big washers and nuts on each end snug tight will hold it and keep it from pushing apart the carrier halves and "spilling" (see the pic in post #9). It's not rocket science if it comes apart, this just makes it easy to handle.

Or try to find someone that has the same gear ratio and would swap their open for your locking carrier. I bet they would even pay you for yours and gladly give you the open. It's win-win for everyone to not need to open the carrier.

Ok so I did some quality YouTube research and I think I have educated myself on this enough to move forward. The 14bolt has a "split case" design, therefore, all I need to do is remove the carrier, ring gear bolts and open her up. Simply remove the locker and replace with the 4 gears, cross shaft and thrust washers. Bolt it back together and adjust it exactly as it was before. Think I'm gonna order this kit from Summit and get it done!

I need to get the FF back in the truck ASAP. Right know I'm running the OE SF I "temporarily" swapped to see if in fact the locker was causing my hate issues on the street. Since it has 4:10 and the Dana 60 up front is 4:56 I don't have 4WD and that make me nervous. I'll eventually get a limited slip and put it in but those options are currently limited (availability and $$).
