Has anyone looked into the options for drop ins for a 10 bolt axel? I've been rummaging around the internet and have found plenty but not too much info on the compatibility. Thanks in advance.

Depends on your usage. If you are doing street/strip racing then you'll probably want to go with something custom and beefier, if you are having issues. If not then paint it black and put it back until you do break it. If you are offroading and have bigger tires then a drop in solution to a 10 bolt is like dropping a hand grenade in with a variable length timer. Never know when it will break or if it will, might be when you go to romp it in a mudhole, might be while towing, or trying to climb a rock.

The more you can tell us about your rig and what your plans are the better we can help!

Gah, that's my mistake. To clarify it's a daily driver with mild engine work on a 350 sbc 700r4 trans, just looking to get some form of Limited slip on the rear. Torsen definitely caught my attention. Wouldnt mind keeping the 3.08 gearing.

Should be fine with just keeping the 10 bolt and just upgrading it

Yep. you can probably have your's checked for pinion bearing wear and replace the seal and if you already have a 3.08 simply put a new pan seal on it bolt it up and put fresh gear oil in it.

I think they'll all be 28 splines unless the rear end has been rebuilt and had all the axles replaced but then you would probably know that already. That being said if you are looking for a limited slip I'd go ahead and get something like an Auburn unit. You will spend more now but less later when it comes down to items breaking.

89-91 10 bolts are 30 spline front and rear on 4x4s. And you can drop a 8.6 carrier in your 8.5 housing with the conversion bearings and use your 8.5 ring and pinion. 8.6 are 30 spline and are in 88 up 1/2 ton trucks. Then use 12 bolt axles which are 30 spline. You may need to clearance the ends at the cross pin thigh not much though.

The 8.5 corporate rear is plenty for your rig. All sorts of aftermarket options. You can order drop in axles, gears etc. Whatever you want.

You are leaving a lot on the table with 3.08s with the od trans. 3.73s or 4.11s would be more than drivable with the 700r4.

agree, i've got 3.08 gears and a LS 5.3/4l60e combo and it still doesn't have balls going up any hill in 4th gear. 3.73 or 3.90 is what I'm looking at getting.

I’m running 3.73’s with a 700r4 with 33’s and it turns about 1500 at about 55-60. My speedo is off so it’s a little hard to tell lol

A lot of the local mud racers swear by their 10 bolts and 12 bolts, mainly for the weight savings over 14 bolt full floater rear and Dana 60 front. They just run chromoly axle shafts and solid non-greasable Spicer u-joints throughout. Most common failure part is the pinion shaft where it meets the yoke. Many are trussed with 4-link systems to prevent axle wrap.

yeh seen a lot of articles saying the 10 bolts arent up to the "crap" hype they are given. Just need to build them up per application.
