Need a bit of help on steering column....

Thanks, the newer wheel was installed by the previous owner, I have the original larger two spoke original wheel I'm planning to put back on. The seat is all the way back, but it's a standard cab PU so maybe that isn't helping. I pulled the seat and put a new cover on, hoping to find the seat...

Need a bit of help on steering column....

Hey guys, I have an 83 GMC K2500 4x4 I'm going through, and one of the things driving me nuts is the steering wheel just seems too close to the driver. The guy before me was little, maybe 5-4 in height. I wonder if he adjusted the column closer to him? Not even sure if that is possible to do...

    Level

As an engineer I was always taught u-bolts should be Grade 5 or 8, and to never re-use them or the nuts (always replace because the threads get stretched when torqued). Stainless steel is not as strong as high tensile steel used in u-bolts. Not saying they won't work, but I would not trust them...

83 350 runs horrid starting when cold

Well guys, the choke was fully closed when cold, fired up, had the nasty stumbling for a couple minutes requiring throttle management to keep running until it smoothed out after a minute or two. Checked and found about 1/4" choke plate open, fast idle was good, once warm I kicked it down and...

83 350 runs horrid starting when cold

Thank you! I had a priority this morning, but tomorrow morning I'm working through this and the other posters advice. My carb is rich (stinky exhaust all the time), so I definitely will use the sheet. I did start leaning it out, by adjusting each side to drop 200rpm (leaning, screw in) then...

83 350 runs horrid starting when cold

Thanks guys, I'll let you know one way or the other if it required adjust and fixed the problem, or if it seems to be right.

    Sm465 whirring noise

You may be right. The PO was the original owner, he said it made the noise since 30K miles, took it to the dealer 3 times and they kept telling him it was a normal 465 noise.... I bought it from him with 104K, put 4K on it since and it's still not broke, so maybe I won't try to fix it? :) It has...

83 350 runs horrid starting when cold

I wish it had screws, it has rivets! I can't see any way to adjust the choke plastic housing and the manual says to bend the rod. I've been thinking of drilling them out and finding some self-tapping screws. Any thoughts?

    Sm465 whirring noise

I have this problem, and for me... yes, the sound goes away, which makes me think the clutch throw out bearing is the problem?

83 350 runs horrid starting when cold

Geez, that's too obvious, thanks for the sanity check. I'll do this tomorrow morning, it should be plenty chilly, and I'll come back and let you guys know the results. Thanks for the advice!

83 350 runs horrid starting when cold

Rich... I think I understand, let's see if I'm right. Pull the cleaner, depress the pedal like normal, don't fire it up, go check to see if the choke is fully closed, right?

83 350 runs horrid starting when cold

Yes, smooth stroke clear to the floor, ease back off to about 20% and fire it. When it's cold outside, should I pull the breather and it should be fully closed before even attempting to start, or do I need check it after I fire it up?

83 350 runs horrid starting when cold

83 K2500, 350CID, Q-Jet 4bbl, manual transmission: When warm or slight cool weather the truck starts immediately and runs smooth. When cold it starts okbut runs horrid, shuddering and rough until it has run a few minutes and you have to work the throttle to keep it running. I've checked...

Initial Timing 83 GMC 350 M code engine

And thanks to 350Runner for the carb adjust advice, and the pic from Rich Weyand - while not my carb, helped me understand ported vs non-ported. As noted... next week or so I'll get to that! Thanks again guys! I'll pay it forward!

Initial Timing 83 GMC 350 M code engine

Rich Weyand is right... after firing (popping/burning in exhaust). I was taught back firing is through the carb or in the intake manifold, and after firing is too lean or too rich gas burning in the exhaust. I was happy yesterday with the setup I achieved (thanks to everyone's advice!) and am...

Initial Timing 83 GMC 350 M code engine

Rich, it's connected per the under-hood diagram; hose from the dist can goes to a vac delay valve, then to another valve that is switched by the thermal coolant vac switch, the source through the coolant switch ultimately comes from the top driver side on front of the carb. I keep reading...

Initial Timing 83 GMC 350 M code engine

Thanks Rich, that sounds like good advice. I need to get a damper timing tape... that goofy tab only goes to about 10 or 12 BTDC. I know I'm now set (as of this morning) around 12, maybe a degree or two more since the damper mark is just off the tab. No popping or gurgling, nice and smooth, no...

Initial Timing 83 GMC 350 M code engine

Thanks guys for the feedback, in relation to the above post.... what would I be looking for using my vacuum gauge? That I'm 15-20 when timed right (whatever "right" is for running smooth)? Or am I looking for a break point where the vac decreases/increases? It's certainly easy to push it to...

Initial Timing 83 GMC 350 M code engine

I'm new here.... I'm curious about timing. I have an 83 GMC K2500 with an M code engine 8600 GVWR so minimal emissions gear, just a smog pump, dont see any EGR, no O2 sensor etc. QuadraJet carb. My emission label says 4 degrees BTC (dist plugged off). When I bought the truck my engine was...
