    Fresh oil

Is it just me or does anyone else, after laying on the ground flat on your back, think that the engine seems to run a little better and smoother following an oil and filter change?? Just wondering.

    Gas smell

Hi everybody. I jumped in the stock '84 C10 yesterday to head to the store and started smelling gas about a half block away. I pulled over and raised the hood and saw gasoline pooled on top of the fuel pump. I couldn't see where it was coming from so I headed back to the house and turned the...

    Suspension grease fittings

I'm getting up there in years and my recall abilities from the late fifties, when I was working in a filling station, is not so good. Can any of you folks give me any ideas of how to fix a grease fitting that will not accept grease? I have three of them. And BTW, how many grease fittings are...

    Mileage question/opinion

Hey guys. I recently started wondering if the mileage (52,400 when I took possession on 6/18) was correct or should it have a 1 in front of it. As a fleet truck for the company I was employed with for 27 years, it has had multiple drivers for 21 years before it was parked for lack of interest...

    Changing brake fluid

I haven't had the top off of my brake fluid reservoir for four years so I decided to take a look. The level was fine but the fluid is very dark. It would probably be a good idea to change it so can anyone tell me the best way to do that without getting air into the system? Thanks for your time...

Some of you will think I'm just anal but being retired, with ample time on my hands, I just want everything operating the way it was designed to, or better. Latest mystery.........

So, everything has been going well, truck running good so I decided to reinstall the original 195 degree thermostat and put in a new temperature sender to get a more accurate reading. While under the hood, I thought it would be a good idea to check the Q-jet mounting nuts and torque to 11...

    Anti theft devices

Are any of you folks familiar with steering column lock covers? The best one I have found is a CarGard CG-1AC by Simjack. The problem is they are out of stock and don't know when they will get any more. You can't even find them in used condition. I understand that it's fairly easy and quick for...

    OEM Cruise Control

After waiting a long time for a re-manufactured servo (plastic vacuum port broken off), i finally got it installed and took it out for a test drive. I turned the multi-function switch to the on position and when I attempted to push the button in, it was already pushed in and would not come back...

Here's my dilemma on my stock engine/carburetor setup. I have the timing set at 11 degrees btdc @ 600 rpm (no dist. advance) and when i connect the distributor to manifold vacuum, the rpm jumps way up. I have backed the idle screw off to the point that it is no longer touching the throttle arm...

    Speedometer Gears

I have just about decided to change from a 2.73 to a 3.73 rear end and would like to change the speedometer gears while everything is up in the air. Does anyone know how to figure out what gears I would need to buy and where I can find them? I have a 700r4 with 225/75 R15 tires (28.3" ht.).

    Differential Gear Ratio

I jacked up the drive wheel and turned the tire twice and got 2-3/4 turns on the drive shaft so it looks like I have 2.73 gears. I'm going to switch to 3.42 gears so can someone tell me what the 8.5 and 8.6 designation means and how I can determine which I have. I frequently break loose the...

    Posi Traction

I have a GREAT running '84 305 with a 700R4, all original 57k truck getting about 12mpg avg, in town mileage. I would like to get a little more performance from the small block so I'm considering changing to a limited slip rear end with 3.42 gears. If I have a 3.08 and P225/75 R15 tires, I...

    Dexron II or III?

I'm not sure what kind of fluid is in my 700R4 transmission. The shop manual recommends Dexron II. I have some Dexron III so would it hurt to top it off with it? Will the two types mix and what's the difference between them? As always..........thanks.

    Transmission Leak

After my '84 C10 sits for 3-4 days, oil from the convertor drains back into the pan, raising the level and leaking out through the splines in the slip yoke. I'm trying to find a good quality replacement, such as Spicer or Dana, before removing the drive shaft. Everything is original with a 700R4...

Correct timing and which vacuum port

I just finished reading a 24 page report by Lars Grimsrud, a GM engineer, titled 'Timing & Vacuum Advance 101'. It's mostly over my head and it left me with a few questions that some of you gear heads may be able to answer. My setup is mostly original with about 56k miles. The emission system...

    QJ Adjustment

Yep, more carburetor stuff. My stock 305, 700R4 VECI label specifies timing at 4 degrees btdc.If all of the emission system components have been removed, is this timing still correct? The last time I checked, the timeing was 9 btdc @ 700 rpm and the truck seems to run well. It idles a little...

    Rough Idle

I replaced my carb about two years ago with a Rochester Qjet from National Carburetors in Jacksonville Fla. All of their carbs are supposed to get a live engine test with adjustments set for a bolt on and go carburetor. I bolted it on and went around 3,800 miles ago and it has operated well...

    Factory AC compressor hose connection

I had the R4 compressor replaced with a new ACDelco unit and it is slowly leaking Freon at the double hose connector. It is held in place with a single bolt and has two O-rings. It looks like one is red and the other is green. Is that correct or should they both be the same color and type?
