Stepside Trim

Do any of the step sides from the 70's have body trim?
Specifically the aluminum that runs along the body that a fleet side has?

Saw a 79 Silverado that only had the trim around the cab window. Didn't see any side trim or holes where it may have been.

Nope. No trim down the sides.

Wheel opening trim was not available originally either.

I've never seen a 73-80 step side with Silverado style trim. Here's one with trim on the wheels wells.

That's similar to the one I saw.
Just the band across the back.
Step was also a different color than the body.

No side trim on steppers.

Also do you know how to verify original option if the glovebox tag is missing?
Can they be found from just the VIN?
Do they put a build sheet under the seat or carpet?

Styling. The studio thought it looked unfinished with the trim on the door and cab, and then nothing on the box.

Options are not coded in the VIN. For some model years you get the engine option, for warranty tracking purposes, but color/trans/axle/anything else is not coded in the VIN.

Build sheets are not placed anywhere intentionally but were used to facilitate the build only. They were intended to be cleaned out and thrown away at the end of the final line just like extra screws, coffee cups, newspapers, etc. Sometimes it was easier to leave them in place then to remove them which is why you often find them in the seat springs, behind the headliner, in the A pillars, under the carpet or on top of the fuel tank (for passenger cars). If you find one in a vehicle you should consider yourself very very lucky, because someone was not doing their job.

If your vehicle was US built and after the 1976 (GMC) or 1977 model year (Chevy) you can send $50 and your VIN to the GM Heritage Center archive and they will return to a copy of the original invoice, which includes RPO content, pricing, original selling dealer information and build dates. http://www.gmmediaarchive.com/?page=1

If your vehicle was built in Canada or built in the US for Canadian use then GM of Canada would have the option content by VIN.

Thanks for the details, I thought you would know.

I know it's Mopar but if you ever watch Graveyard Cars they always talk about the build sheet under the seat. As well as the fender tag.

I found the build sheet under the front seat on my '80 C20 3+3 in the mid 90's. It's the only one I found out of the 8 squares I've owned.

They likely do not do this anymore.. some interns probably got talked to... but try emailing [email protected] and provide the VIN and year and ask if you could get a build sheet. Nicely. It worked for a few people I know.
