They are a very uncommon sight, especially these days. Last one I saw, it was over 10 years ago and it was heavily rusted.

I'm guessing it was only an option on a single tank truck?

Looks like the glove box door. Make your own :superhack:

Out of curiosity once I held the glove box door up to the side of the my 79's cab, and the curvature of the glove box matches the box side really well.

Those could have been a great idea but they needed a way to protect them from the elements. After about 6 months or so in our neck of the woods they were so crudded up they were hard to open and close.

Last under bed storage compartment I had was on my 1972 GMC 3500.
It was located on the passenger side.
It had the 8.5' bed. There was the 22 gal in cab tank, the factory under bed 18 gal driver side auxiliary tank, and I had a custom 30 gal tank filling up across the first 6" inside the bed.
Truck was thirsty with a 12' Amerigo camper and the 402 factory BB.

Brochure pics of 1973, 1974, and 1975.

That pic in the brochure is a little off from the actual tool compartment. These things were notorious for rust which is why they probably quit making them after 75. The door had vent holes but no coating on the inside so they rusted out. The hinges would get rusty and make it hard to open and close so the hinges would get sprung. And, there was a brace on the bed side below the box that was a trap for mud and crap that caused the bed side to rust out. BUT, its a neat option to have because not many people know that it was even available!

My father-in-law had a F250 camper special that had one of those boxes. I'm thinking it was a 78 or 79 but I could certainly be wrong.
Anyway, the hinge got so rusted you couldn't open it.
Really cool option though.

That is one gorgeous truck you got there my friend. The clean long bed, Cragers and RWL tires is just plain sexy. Well done Sir.
