High Torque Starter

Or one with the remote solenoid. I've seen some mention on here about them in a search but never a definitive make or model number as to what anyone has tried and knows works good. If there IS a thread, then please redirect me to it and as Rosanrosanadana would say 'never mind'. A mod can then make this thread go away.

If not, then perhaps this makes a nice labeled post that is easy to find for future reference.

A lot of folks, myself included, prefer the the factory high torque starter that went into production in the mid 90's. They are smaller and lighter too. And reliable to boot.

Do these have the separate solenoid? I'll be running long tube headers.....dont see any issues but if so, was wondering about that too.

I saw online awhile ago somebody used a Denso (Japanese) starter that was like half the size of the original.....said it started far better and was quieter to boot. ?!

the solenoid is external but attached. it looks just like your existing starter, but much smaller.

I think I told went to Napa and told them i'm looking for a starter for a 1997 k1500 5.7. I believe up to 99 5.7 should be the same.

I run a Hitachi they call the “dominator”, part #PP106. Also have a Ford starter relay mounted on the fender.

Swapped my boat anchor on my 350 with a GM mini from a GM 5.7.
Less than half the weight, more room around it, good header clearance, nowhere near the amp draw; just better all-around.
While you're there, change out your old 'battery-to-solenoid wire' for some #2 welding cable.

I bought a clockable mini starter off of eBay for about $90. I rotated the solenoid to 6:00 so it’s on the bottom now, works great.

Top left is your average truck starter, bottom left is s 305/T5 starter (car), top right is an aftermarket Denso type, bottom right is the factory high-torque starter for the later trucks.

You can get the GM Hi Torque off the 96 Vortec 305 and 350's for sure. I'm thinking they actually started in 95 though even though it was the last year for TBI, but if you get one off of a 96-2001 350, you're good to go. Vans did keep the 5.7 350's longer than the trucks, maybe didn't go LS until 2003 or so. So if you went to a Pull A Part, or LKQ, you might have a good chance of scoring one cheap and then have a core when it does take a dump.

FWIW I am running the stock style starter with long tube headers on a mild 350 and no heat shields or anything and have not had any issues with it overheating the solenoid, even in high 90 degree temps outside and after driving it. So I wouldn't really worry about an external solenoid on it at first and see if it causes any issues.

Funny, The new starter I put in my truck when I rebuilt the engine is going on the fritz. Have about 750 miles on the engine since putting it back in the truck. I guess stock style starters are not a fan of big blocks with roughly 10.5:1 compression! Who would've guessed it!
She got to sounding pretty rough by the end of the day yesterday.. So i'm also on the hunt for a new starter, and this thread caught my attention at the right time! Lol

Yep, you need a high torque with that kind of compression.
