Hey Dave,
Any friends around you that have an older 4X4 V8 Jeep? easiest thing you can learn to drive a straight shift in. I learned in my 72 c-10 that had a 3 on the tree but I have helped several people learn in a buddies jeep. They are typically geared low and don't stall very easy.:High 5:

Nope

I taught myself how to drive a standard, I learned on stuff like V8 trucks and more powerful V8 Camaros, which I think ended up being a good thing. If you learn to drive the tricky stuff first, then you will never have trouble driving just about anything.

I thought about getting one of those clutch gauge kits that lights up to tell when to change gears. But havent found one yet.

You can get a tachometer with a shift indicator light, set it at around 2500 rpms or 3000. Then when the engine revvs up and gets to 3000 rpms the shift light lights up (usually bright red) and lets you know its time to shift. That would just be a basic guideline, you can shift at higher rpms if you need more power like for towing, or a little lower if your just putting around and want a smooth shift. Or you can hold the same gear for certain speed zones, like 2nd gear for 15 mph zones, 3rd gear for 30 mph zones, etc. What i mean is you don't have to shift through all the gears just because the truck's rolling, it just all depends on your speed what gear you need. Also if the truck you have now is 4WD you can put it in 4Lo and it will help keep you from stalling it out. You can just about dump the clutch at idle in 4Lo and not kill the engine. I'd like to read on here that you gave it a shot, as long as you don't wreck anything. Just remember if you get in any trouble and not sure what to do you can turn the key off 1 position to kill the motor but not lock the steering column and as long as the truck is in gear it will come to a stop.

Should be able to get one at any autoparts store like auotzone, o'rielys, etc. Maybe cheaper off of ebay or craigslist

It varies. All depends what I need it for.

my wife says that's why she doesn't like or want to drive my four wheeler because you have to shift it, but it's clutchless, she says she doesn't know when to shift. I just go by ear or feel, when it revs up shift it, when it stops speeding up shift it, then on downshift when I come to a stop or want to slow down without hitting the brakes I downshift. if I'm climbing and feel or hear it bog, downshift. pretty simple I think.

My old man always said if you can start and stop a stick shift on a hill without killing it then you got it made.

If this thing was street legal I would practice driving it in my development with the 3 or more connecting rod knocks it has before changing the engine. Either there's air in the clutch lines or the clutch is worn.

**** Dave, I'll teach ya! I'm being dead serious man, if you want to learn, I can help you. Especially if you have a manual truck that you can learn in. If not my Honda is a manual and I could teach my seven year old how to drive that damn thing. We can get together on weekends, theres about three hundred empty parking lots to choose from....

To each his/her own, but I'd take a manual in pretty much ANYTHING over an auto. It's actually a lot of fun & laughs stalling out the first 12 times! Then, when you get it, you feel like KING OF THE WORLD!!!! :rocking:
