I went back out to the camper a few hours later last night and it was down to 64 degrees inside. I set the thermostat up to 66* so it would kick off. I then set it lower again to see if it would kick back on. The Cool On icon just flashed again and nothing happened. Maybe it's because I'm trying to turn it back on too soon and there's some kind of safety built into it? But that wouldn't explain why it did that the first time, before the AC kicked on...

I know my home thermostat does have a time out on the AC control so it will give the compressor about 15 minutes to bleed off before attemping to restart. Apparently you can smoke a compressor if you try to restart it while it still had residual pressure?

Yeah, when the pressure is still there, the startup surge is fighting a really bad dead-head on already hot windings, and it is pretty tortuous on a compressor. Once or twice isn't terrible, but if it happens regularly its a death sentence. I don't think my RV AC has that, but it usually just trips the breaker if it hasn't sat for at least a couple minutes.

This evening when I get home, I'll kick on the AC so it can cool down a bit, then set the temp warm enough for it to kick off. But this time I'll just leave it sit and see what happens.

My other camper still has the original Duo-Therm thermostat. It's not digital. On that one, when the thermostat cycles, the AC unit stays running but the blower kicks off. I don't know if that's how it's supposed to be, or if it’s got something wrong too.

Ok, the thermostat issue doesn't seem to be an actual issue. I set it to 75 and let it get down to that and kick off. Then I left it alone. Sure enough, about 5 minutes later, the AC kicked back on.

I have no idea why the thermostat did not work when I first tried it.

You project really takes me back. (Summer of 1984, it were.) I bought a 1960s "sportsman" camper from a guy for $200. Rebuilt it while mounted on the back of the truck. Framing, interior, insulation, wiring, everything. (The truck was a stripped 1980 F100; yes, I have been unfaithful.) Those old campers stood about 10" higher than the cab, and had jalousied windows on the sides and sliding glass across the back. Simpler times. I had a 5-gallon water cask, a camp stove with an 11-pound propane bottle, a cooler, a 12V oscillating fan and a couple of lights. While I was working on the camper, my mom and my grandmother surprised me by making curtains for the windows. My brother and I traveled all over the country in that thing. Many happy memories.

The awning still works. I forgot it's a cool checkered flag pattern, lol. I think I mentioned that I got this camper from my sister in law, who had got it from her (and my wife's) aunt. The aunt used to take this camper to Nascar races all the time. Hence the checkered flag pattern.

The checkered flag part is in good shape, but it's pretty rotten in the blank area along the camper. There's a tarp/canopy place in the area, I'll inquire about replacing just that section. A seam won't bother me.

I don't have great cell service in my yard and apparently the aluminum framed/skinned camper completely blocks all of my service. But, I did realize that where I park the truck, I've got a couple bars of 5G service. So I turned on my work phone's mobile hot spot, set it on the dash and bam, I can post on GM squarebody as I sit in my rocker chair under the awning, lol.

Oh and I don't know what this swivel bracket doohickey is on the side of the camper, but it makes a great hat hanger.

My awning had similar deterioration issue so I rubber cemented a strip of vinyl across the damaged area, which was 10 plus years ago and it’s still holding strong. I used left over vinyl from my boat floor redo. I was surprised how easy it went on, I was able to do it when it was all rolled up, I finished it by running a thick bead of outdoor 50 yr silicone around all seams. I’d consider it a Ricco approved repair.

The biggest issue is along the entire edge, where the round bead edging is sewed on. It's deteriorated all along there.
