Any GM 2.2 engine experts in readerland?

Last year my son bought a 97 S-10 with the rompin stompin 2.2 engine and a 5 speed. A couple weeks ago, the engine started making some VERY bad sounds, it locked up tight on the drive home.

Over the weekend, I found what is quite possibly the most rusted out 99 S10, also a 2.2 but with an automatic. It runs and drives well, just suffering from a terminal case of tin worm infection.

The plan was to swap engines and scrap what was left. Pretty straightforward, until I had the trucks parked side by side. The 99 engine looks very different than the 97. My local salvage yard shows the engines technically don’t interchange, but isn’t sure what the difference is. Swapping intakes or exhaust is no big deal, but before taking either truck apart I’d like to know what I’m getting into.

I paid 400 bucks for the 99, I figured the 4.10 limited slip rearend and wheels/tires are almost worth that.

Anyone in readerland familiar with these engines? Thanks.

Hmm... I used to know the answer to this. But I can't remember. I'm almost positive it was more involved than just an intake and exhaust manifold swap though. I could take some guesses as to the major differences, but memory isn't really good enough for that either. Fairly positive the timing chain setup is different. Maybe. Lol.

For someone that "doesn't like" the later S10's, you sure want pictures of them often. You're nuthin but a closet round S10 lover, lol.
Me bein a wheel and tire freak i actually wanted ta see the wheels and tires he said were worth the $400... i dont like the jelly bean style!
