Fender antenna debacle

He’ll, all that trouble might as well install a retractable mast Antenna.

Not sure where to install it but they don’t go as high as a permanent antenna, maybe 2/3 the length

Also fairly delicate/easily damaged

The retractable antenna requires a lot of space, it wont fit in behind the fender.
Power antennas are great, turn the key and it starts to extend.

its surprisingly small for what it is, but yes indeed.
Technically it will only come on when the radio is on

The radio you are using needs to have a trigger wire for the antenna to have it extend when turned on. If the radio does not have that, then key on must be used.

Or a dash switch. I've got a couple old GM kits that come with a dash switch.

both of my cars with antenna mast have the ol 2/3 extended with a distinct kink /bend and dont go any further up or down

The first car my step great grand father evidently would use dish soap for lubricant..he gummed up the passenger door latch real nasty and the mast never stood a chance.

The aurora, it appears to be just the antenna part is damaged and cant move. acdelco makes a servicekit to replace just that and the cable i do believe

Does anyone even listen to AM/FM any more? I can't recall the last time I did. Maybe 15 years ago.

For my restoration I bought a Delco original radio that was modified with Bluetooth. I can stream from my phone. For my needs this is perfect. I want to listen to something but do not want to hack my dash up to fit a modern radio. Retro sound was the other option.

Spend the time/money and close up that hole. Install the windshield antenna and not have to worry about a whip antenna.

Power antennas are good when they are working. They need maintenance and do not flex at all. In my early career, 1980s, replacement masts were a regular repair. Also you need to clean the mast from grime that builds up.

A wire wrapped? Sounds like a reinforcement or something
My gmt800 antenna is notably stiffer than the single piece f150 antenna

Yes! On some model vehicles the antenna would whistle in the wind.

You can put a power antenna there but you have to get creative about it. Find one from a 4-N wagon - late 80s/early 90s (after that they went to in-glass antennas also).

I've sized them up and they fit and work fine. I'm just going with a windshield antenna because the only reason I would need anything at all is for a weather band and its one less thing to mess with. I cant tell you within a 5 yr period when I last listened to broadcast radio.

But that hole is huge and in a bad place. I'd make it go away - will never be as easy as it is now.

I do - in all the vehicles although more Satellite radio in the Cobalt.

The 4RUNNER tape deck still works, too.

Fender is NOT reinforced for mount, but didn’t verify the fender on my 88 CC.

Also shows hole at rear of fender where the OP’s antenna is mounted, and probably where cable came thru fender. Hole is also on a removed fender I have from an 84.
