I have a couple of questions I was wondering if someone can answer for me. I have a '92 G20 van, 350 TBI w/MD8 code. From what I've read, it should be a 4L60 or 80 by 1992, but were they still coded as an MD8, which identifies a 700 trans? Also, I'm looking at swapping in the engine and trans from a '93 Caddy, with the same engine & trans code. Would that also be a 700? As I understand, they were basically the same, but the 4L's just had better clutch packs? Can you enlighten me a bit, please? Thanks!...Bob

4l means 4speed longitudinal transmission,a 700r4 is also 4speed longitudinal. I'm not surprised your code comes up as a 700r4 instead of 4l60 they were the same transmission just a name change until they went to 4l60e which is electronic controlled. Look at both the transmissions on your 2 vehicles if neither or both have a TV cable your fine if one does and one doesn't it's not a straight swap.

The '93 Caddy has the exact code, wouldn't it be different if it was the "E"? I've read where GM started using the E in 93-94

Well you would certainly think the rpo code would change, but I'd still look at both transmissions and check for a TV cable. rpo codes are not necessarily the same from year to year and car line to car line. They recycle the numbers just like an l98 could be a 350 tuned port or could be a later model 6.0 In your case if I had to bet I'd bet they are the same but I'd still look.
