Asking for a buddy who bought a 1982 C10 with the diesel engine.

I told him I thought it was a counter weight/anti vibration piece but not sure as I’ve never owned a truck with an automatic transmission.

That’s the drip collector 2000. If you remove it you’ll need a bigger piece of cardboard….

Interesting. I don't remember seeing a damper on a C10 before. I remember seeing them on Astro vans though.

.a option or a aftermarket thing that is no longer there. (like this is the carrier / protector)

I seen a 1983? era K20 single cab a few weeks back, it had a thing like a rear diff protector hanging,...but it was right under the center of the single cab. made me wonder if it ever had side steps and that was all that remains....or something that hangs down to catch on when "high centered" vs. taking out the drive shaft

It does look like a tuned damper, probably specific to the diesel powertrain.

No it never was a military truck. Not to say the transmission could’ve been swapped out before though. It’s a factory diesel civilian version is all he knows. The guy he bought it from sold it cheap to him because he couldn’t get it to crank up. Help my buddy bleed all the lines and it’s running great now. He’s just fixing odds and ends on it now. He was under it fixing the shifter linkage when he sent me this picture.

1982 is a little bit before I joined the driveline development group.

My officemate is/was the guy that added all that stuff to the M/L vans. Vehicles with a big interior cavity are more sensitive to vibrations resulting in booming. He was trying to knock down the energy, both air born and structure born paths, before it got into the body.

It's really hard to reverse engineer why some of that stuff is there. We had a new T bird brought into the chassis roll dynamometer. It had dampers hanging all over underneath. We pulled them all off one by one and never did figure out what they were for.

My 1984 c10 6.2/700r4 has that same weight/ damper hanging on the rear of the transmission. Mine is a drip collector too

So if the trans was out and setting on the ground, would those weird looking things stabilize it?

It’s funny how different manufacturers put dampers on and in various spots. I can remember seeing them having double dampers hanging off either side of the yoke end of the rear axles on some vehicles.

Yeah Dudge had or has something similar too on pickups. I don’t even remember now but as far as I’m concerned anything like that is the last ditch effort (we don’t know why tf this thing won’t stop trying to shake itself to death so let’s mask it with a slap on dampener.
