Passing On a '99 3500 Discussion

I saw a 1999, 2 wd 3500 for sale while traveling and called about it. It was pretty rough but had potential.

Owner selling has had it for 3 years and used it to haul mainly trash, and said the heaviest load he ever had in it was busted concrete as high as the cab and it barely made the bed squat. Previously was a fleet truck for a pavement/concrete company. Generally the truck looks pretty good. Some surface rust here and there, a dent in the rear bumper that has been bent back out, and the bed was obviously worked. Still a good looking truck.

Jasper transmission installed before he bought it. Dana 60 rear end. 7.4 litre 454. Crew Cab.

Needs new sending unit so the gas gauge will work. All other guages have been replaced and work. AC there but not working. Needs new back glass as it leaks and plexiglass has been installed(?). This owner has put the OD just past 300,000. Asking $3200, OBO.

For what I would want to do with it, some of this is enticing but seems like too much work for me that I would really want to get in to. I would love to drop it, get all the problems fixed and cruise it daily, but it has been used like a truck should have been it's whole life. No telling. Planning to snap a pic when I head out for errands in a few...

Worth a further look at i think. $3200 maybe a bit high for the mileage.

Need to take a close look and see if it's rusted out at all.

Has some desirable stuff though.

Should be a 14 Bolt full float rear end, not a Dana 60.

Out here in the Midwest that would probably sell quickly at $3200. Being a 2wd detracts some from the value.

Mileage is just one factor, there are plenty of sub 100k mile vehicles that are totally roached and at the end of their useful service lives, while there are vehicles that have 300k+ that have been taken care of and up on maintenance and are ready for another couple hundred thousand. There is a reason it made it 300k.

Maybe @HotWheelsBurban wants to add another CCLB 400 to her fleet…

The seller told me the paving company may have put the Dana 60 on it. They likely put the Jasper transmission in. I understand Jasper is rebuilt transmissions.

Yes 2WD. And, yes, the Dana, the 454, and the crew cab are awesome. No telling how well off the engine and rear end and rebuilt transmission are. My mind immediately goes to cruising with some power and not hard work for another 100,000.

I'd double check that rear axle, the silhouette looks a lot like a 14 bolt (imo, the shape plus it hangs too low to be a D60). A rear D60 might be cool but it's definitely a downgrade from a considerably bigger 14 bolt full floater.

Hard pass. That's a $1500 truck to me. It's been beat to death ALL it's life, been screwed with and not maintained most likely. The plexi back glass is the perfect example of that. I'd be curious if there's damage to the cab back there, may not even be able to put a window back in it without serious repair work. The Dana 60 instead of the 14bolt is very questionable. Why? What happened to the 14-bolt? Or does the guy not know what he's talking about and it still has it's 14-bolt?

Doors are sagging, could just need hinge pins but if they've been that way long enough, it'll need full hinges replaced which is a huge PITA. Gauges have been replaced? So who knows if it's truly 300k or if it's more? That'll be a rubber floor/roll up window truck, for good or bad whatever your opinion is (bad to me, I want power).

Jasper transmissions are iffy whether they're good or not, my dad hates them cuz the county kept buying them for the fleet trucks and his guys were R&R'ing them constantly. That 454's gonna be good for 8-10mpg too.

I'd much rather throw in a couple more grand and find a better truck IMHO

I have officially been back in touch and passed on it.
I was interested to hear what some of you all would have to say about it, as I was also interested but found myself wondering why on several things as well.

That truck would pretty much only be good for the engine/trans and maybe the cab/front clip for a big build

No thanks, one of these big boys is enough for me! And mine is thirsty enough and it's a 350....

The key is having inaccurate odometer and a busted fuel gauge so you don't really know but you put gas in often "just in case".
