I'd still buy a GV... you know, if I could afford it, lol.
I have a gear vender in my Olds, if I was looking for overdrive today I’d go 4L80 without hesitation.

I bought the gear vender used about 15 years ago. At that time, the 4L80 stuff was much more expensive.

Compare prices, you could do a 4L80 conversion much cheaper and have thr added bonus of the ability to program exact shift points, and lockup converter

I'm way late to this party too, but curious what OP decided to do and did?

Gear Vendor would be OUT for me. NOPE. Way to expensive, not to mention, only would be used in 2wd. 4L80-E is for sure the way to go if you're willing to spend GV type money and then you get to use 4wd in all the gears. 100% agree with Matt here. To many Pros to the 4L80-E swap. But it sounds like this guy might need a lower rear gear ratio too which also means front axle too.

So who knows for sure. I've been told that you can use a standard length 2wd 4L80-E and cut the output shaft and have it work for a NP208 conversion. True or Naww?!?!?

If you convert a th400 to a 4l80e, and have an ecm, can the chip be burned to control it? Or do you still need a stand alone controller?

If yhou have the ECM, harness and have it flashed to fit your powertrain, then NO, you no longer need the stand alone controller. Stand Alone Controller is for those who have an all mechanical non computer controlled vehicle, but the 4L80-E depends on the ECM or Stand Alone controller to tell it what to do.

Mine in the RV? I'm sure it's gutless wonder with PeanutPort Heads. Stock OEM 80s 454. What is it generally, 230hp I think???

I have a Figure 8 NP205, so that's what I needed to do. I swapped in a long 2wd output shaft when I rebuilt the 4L80 and added the rear reluctor gear at the same time. The TH400 I am replacing has the long ~4.5" output shaft, so you have top do that. On an 80's NP208, you don't need to do that. He will have to swap the input shaft on the NP208 to a 32 spline input and then the stock 4wd 4L80 will bolt right up using the stock 4L80 adapter. No adapters or anything needed.

Personally, I would just get a junkyard 4wd 4L80 with the adapter, wiring harness, and PCM for a couple hundred bucks and swap it all in together. You just need RPM and TPS inputs from the engine and you are good to go. Buy an HP tuners, EFI live, or ELM327 adapter and tune it to your hearts content.

Good to know. This is my project for my K1500 to K2500 axle conversion. I already have the Th400/NP208 married combo, just that the Th400 needs rebuilt. So I don't even need to swap the NP208 input to 32 spline. It's already done and has the round adapter. So I just need to find a 2wd 4L80-E and get a stand alone controller or make my own toggle switch shifter, which I really don't want to do. I'd rather just have the stand alone controller with the ability to make all the adjustments as far as shift points and shift firmness etc. Then I'll keep the 4.10 axles and use them instead of the 3.73 axles. I have both sets. Then I can use the 3.73 14b FF in my 84 C20.
