Ok, I have a 1987 chevy c10 s/b pick up, 350 /700r4 race trans.
My problem is that i can start truck, go to 2 or 3 places, starting and shutting off no problem.
Go to start it again, and the fuel pump primes, but the engine wont turn over.
If I wait about hour or so, it will start.
She has started, and driven fine in the past.
I thought it was battery, changed it 2 times in front of napa, and it still wont start.
I have a wire and ran it from positive battery terminal, to positive of solonoid, the starter engages, and the engine turns over, but it still wont start.
30 minutes go by, and she she starts.
Any ideas?
David
I had to fix that^^^^^
First of all, welcome to GMSB!
Has your truck been modified at all, or is it stock?
Old battery cables, and dirty terminals, both on the battery and starter, will cause heat related starting issues.
If you have the funds to do so, I would go ahead and buy a new positive, and negative cable, and see if that cures the problem. There is a bolt hole on the front of the passenger side head that would be a perfect place to relocate the ground cable to.
A ground cable with a few brocken strands, and corrosion, is like a kinkedngarden hose.
It wouldn't hurt to see if you can re-torque your starter bolts as well.

Vapor lock !!!

Retard the timing a bit helps.

Also if running a Qjet, probably have leaking well plugs.

Cranks, but won't start? Ignition module usually. You will want to check for spark the next time it acts up.

I read that is fuel pump primes but won't turn over. Which leads me to believe it doesn't turn over.

the fuel pump prime shot clears any possibility of vapor lock.
x2 on the ignition module....or even the coil.

yeah, scratch that I wasn't thinking TBI. But still, if he says not turning over, that means it's not cranking huh? Not sure how that would have to do with IM or Coil. If it was a crank but no start then I'd think so.

Oh I see, I read the part about it turning over but not starting... when a wire is run from the battery to the starter solenoid.

Is the ignition turned on when you jump the stater solenoid?
