What I consider my first car was a 64 Grand Prix and also at the same time, shortly after getting it, had a 62 Chevy PU. I've pretty much always and forever had at least 2 vehicles and always prefered older ones and working on them.

Same here. Even in high school, having 2 vehicles made it fun to mess with the cops. Could cruising the car on one pass, and driving the truck a few minutes later. Today I own 4. 2007 Subaru Forest XT 5 speed, 1991 Cherokee 4x4 with and Old Man Emu suspension kit, 1981 Silverado bone stock except for the vortec heads and intake, and 1965 3/4 ton project truck that I need money to finish.

I bought a 1975 chocolate brown Ford Maverick with a 302 V-8 and a C-4 auto for $200 when I was 14 back in 1989. I spent the next couple of years shining it up, painting the wheels and just cleaning it up. I thought I had a rocket ship until I learned the hard way that the 302 was VERY tired when I tried to race a GMC Cyclone. :emotions133:

After the race, the dude in the truck got out, picked my ass up off the street and handed it back to me. I thought that was nice of him to do.

Sadly, I wrapped the poor thing around a tree one dark, stormy night just after my 17th birthday going 35-40 mph.

Tell me you kept the 283.... Those are REALLY getting hard to find. Everyone wants the cranks. If you put that crank in a small journal 327, you get a 302.

From what I remember, the 283 cranks were cast and not forged like the actual 302 cranks. I could very well be incorrect.

ALL small journal motors had Forged Cranks. 265, 283, 302 and sj 327. If it was small journal, it was Forged.

The first vehicle i ever owned was a 77 Malibu Chevelle,Laguna...Whatever you want to call it. Got it when i was 9.... Built the engine and stuff up. It was a 305 .040 over... She was a screamer! lol... Never did anything with it. I ended up pulling the engine out of it when i was 15 for my mud race truck... Like an idiot. And it sat.. Up intill last summer... When i sold it  I'm 27 now lol....

But my first car i got when i was 16 was a 78 Buick Regal Turbo 3.8... Loved that car.

that recipie is an absolute antique. nobody builds a small 300hp stroker, for that cost. times are a changing. you can buy a really good stroker pumping 350hp all day long with a warranty for less than the cost of building a 302.

Sometimes its the cool factor rather then what makes the most HP. Since i didnt live those times, i try to live them in these times. I admire the people that were in HS in the 70's.

And the 302 was a DESTROKED 327, they were ment to rap hard to around 8500-9000, usually paired with 4.56's-4.88's.

the 302 was built to compete in the trans am circuit. it was only built for 1 1/2 years. it had to be able to be a contender in the t/a circuit it had to be less than (correct me if i,m wrong) 304 cid? it was a great lil motor, but not great enough to recreate. the 327 put it to bed. its still a great history icon, but just that.

But they still sucked pretty much. Notice they didn't make it into production cars other then the Z28. There was a purpose for the destroking, not they wanted to. That's not a good bore/stroke combo really. But that's how you squeeze every cube out of race that had a limit of 302 Cubes. That's the only reason the 302 came about.
