Well since my 79 square is going so well and my brother has been eying it up, hes a diesel die-hard and when i told him these squares came with cummings he thought i was on crack. So i proved him wrong lol, and now he wants to know more and maybe we can go find one and go half for a new farm truck (they don't need anymore farm trucks) but hey if it means i get to drive another square then hells ya.

They didnt come with Cummins engines. The 6.2 and 6.5 TD were Detroit Diesel Engines. Detroit was owned by GM.
Daimler bought Detroit in 2000, with a partner for the off road diesel engines.
power on the 6.2
Horsepower / Torque (at start): 130*hp @ 3,600 rpm / 240*lb·ft @ 2,000 rpm
Horsepower / Torque (at final): 143*hp @ 3,600 rpm / 257*lb·ft @ 2,000 rpm
Horsepower / Torque (army): 165*hp @ 3,600 rpm / 330*lb·ft @ 2,100 rpm

The 6.5 TD

Power / Torque (lowest): 180*hp @ 3,400 rpm / 360*lb·ft @ 1,700 rpm
Power / Torque (highest): 215*hp @ 3,200 rpm / 440*lb·ft @ 1,800 rpm

They weren't made for high hp/tq, they were made to be fuel efficient.

You may have seen a couple on here that have been converted to Cummins.

No, these 6.2 and 6.5's are not hot rods but treated right, they'll get you 20mpg and that's the only reason anyone will use them. The diehards that use them, do it for the mpg and they know not to abuse them. But, you're forgetting to look at the torque spec too. Look at the torque. You won't get that in a 350 gas motor. And the 454 will get there on the torque, but it's only about half the mpg.

That torque also happens at a very low rpm! I would so rock a 6.5TD!

I hope to someday rock a turbo 6.2 if I can talk my brother out of his ATS turbo setup.
