Borrowed a timing light with tach from a friend, broke out the multimeter, and adjusted base idle and TPS voltage on my ‘87 350TBI. I noticed a while back that a previous owner had popped the cap off the idle stop screw and played around with it at some point in the previous 40 years. I’ve got a copy of the emissions/drivability manual with instructions on how to set it back to factory so that’s what I did. After that, had to drill out some slots on the TPS sensor and bend the tab a little. Ended up with around 0.68V at idle, 4.25V at WOT which ain’t perfect but it’ll work and it’s smooth all the way through. It was 0.63 at idle and 3.8 at WOT when I first checked.

I spent some time last night working on the base idle trying and failing to get it right using the tach in the truck as a reference. The digital tach in that timing light I borrowed made all the difference.

After doing my thermostat, water pump, and all new belts, we took the truck out for dinner and a cruise last Wednesday and it ran like a top, I was pumped. Then yesterday afternoon I had to run an errand to get supplies for a concert on Friday. Driving to the package store it ran great, then as I backed into to a spot as soon as I stopped the truck died. I thought well that's odd, went into the store and upon coming out the truck cranked and didn't start. Popped the hood, and saw some coolant in the shroud area, but nothing leaking anywhere else, so then this happened:

At this point I don't feel like chasing the demons anymore so my buddy is coming over tonight and we are putting together the list for my LS swap.

Well that’s like using a double jack to install a tack to hang a picture on the wall but we all have our justifications..
Edit, it’s probably a $30 fuel pump or $25 ign module.

Sometimes I like to use a 9.5abv IPA to install tacks.. :D (double jack is a Firestone walker IPA as well as big ole jack)

I hear ya, and get it, but my plan was to LS swap all along, then I flip flopped to keeping the 350, and ultimately after doing the work I did I found several other little things that the previous owner did/hacked that brought me back to the LS. I was going to wait until winter, but this has just expedited the process for me.

On a positive note as I sat there broke down three guys stopped to tell me how awesome the truck looked:rofl:

Now now.. let's not try and talk anyone out of LS swapping.. let's instead live vicariously through it. :D

Patrick, sidebar, fun to see someone over on that coast who knows about the deeper brews at Firestone. I grew up Central Coast CA and Firestone was my main brewery to partake in.

Local brewery here which has some stellar brews has this one and is my go-to IPA when really-really thirsty:

They put out some really good stuff. I brewed for fun for about 20 years, so I am always on the look out for the unique, complex beers. That one ticked the boxes!

That sounds delicious!

We get very spoiled here, there is a brewery called Tree House, it started as one small spot and is now one huge spot with several smaller spots in the North East. Literally some fo the best beers I have ever had and you can only buy them at the brewery. Every time I go I drop a couple hundred at least. Check some of these bad boys out: https://orders.treehousebrew.com/oa/order/menu

I used gorilla tape on mine 2-3 months ago. It holding up well during a hot summer and it looks fine.
That’s the trick right there. I folded it over both sides, then ran the screws through it into the dash. It’s been 9 months and holding up fine.
