Alkali and aluminum... Who knew?

Learned some stuff ! It took me 67 years to figure out how to get a carb really clean for rebuilding. Pine-Sol soak, then a quick blast with baking soda in a hand held blaster. I'm blown away! Never had anything work this well, not even chem dip.

So, bottom line, bought a book and a good rebuild kit from Cliff Ruggles and rebuilt a spare quad I had laying here. Then dropped it in the truck today. So far so good! Really makes a difference when you actually understand and set the secondary flaps correctly. I am having trouble getting low enough rpm... No leaks detected, but I think I need to switch to a ported vacuum source for the advance to get the idle rpm to stay under 1000 rpm.

You know what else I learned ? Blasting with baking soda outside isn't just harmless powder on my polished aluminum wheels. It actually eats aluminum and I had to go and polish with a 5" wheel, every darn rim to get most of it off. it really dug in there and there are still some spots. Dang !

I know alotta guys here into motocross and small carbs use pinesol in a vibrasonic cleaner on their carbs and swear by it!

This is what I started with. I only soaked it for about 4 hours, no fancy vibrotank, Hot water bath after (black crap just runs off), then a blow out. It actually bubbles on the aluminum a bit.. some sort of mild acid in Pine-sol I guess. The baking soda blast instantly wiped off anything left in every nook and cranny. I can't wait to do another now!

Me neither, but after today, I will NOT forget! I never did have a Chemistry class. I did have one of those Estes or american flyer(?) brand chem Sets when I was a kid, but we only wanted to know how to make things smoke and bang. Then later on we were interested in a different kind of smoke and bang.

Ponied up and bought a buffer, scotchbrite, and compound to shine up the truck for drive-in date night. First time with a buffer had me feeling sketchy. 4 hours later!

Got those new blades much beefier than the stupid plastic ones just sucks I can't get them locally. Need to adjust the passenger arm up a notch or two, don't feel like fighting with it to get it off right now.
