Here is a Th350 with the spacer to make it the same case length as the 700r4. I have not yet cut down that 2wd output shaft to make the 700r4 output shaft length, but I did.

Here is a 700r4 with the OEM 4x4 output shaft. Ready to have any OEM Chevy Squarebody Tcase mounted to it with the correct OEM adapter, and NO spacer.

This pic here of yours. See how far the output sticks out? That will bottom out about 2 inches too early in the th350/NP205 adapter. If you cut it short, it will bottom out on the splines befor the adapter can meet up to the tranny case.

That output above, it protrudes through the 208 adapter and then sticks into the t-case. The early 4x4 th350 output (like used with the NP205) only sticks right into the coupler in the adapter, that's it.

Also, the NP203 and NP205 use the same short input that came in the '80 and earlier TH350.

I can only take your word for that. I was not aware of that. In that pic, the shaft looks longer than it is. This is a better pic of the same transmission. The shaft really is not all that long. That is an OEM uncut 4x4 700r4 output shaft.

So you are saying then, there were 2 different 4x4 output shafts? 1 pre 80 and 1 post 80?

Yes, exactly. Because of this, you cannot put a NP208/NP241 on the back of a early TH350.

I'd go grab a pic to show you, but the ports quit working on the laptop again, so I can't load pictures.

I've never heard of that. I've heard there are ONLY 4 output shafts for Th350. 6in short, 9 in intermediate that everyone calls long, 12in longshaft, and then the 4x4 output shaft. Never heard of a 4x4 short or long, or 4x4 early or late.

You don't really hear about it because there were hardly any of the long 4x4 outputs, compared to the short. '81 had the long output, then in '82 you started seeing all the 700r4 trucks.

Your backwards though, most people didn't realize there was a longer 4x4 output shaft.

So... you feel like tossing TH400s into this discussion too, lol. Might as well at this point...

I remembered to get you some pictures today. I don't have the short output around, but the th350/np205 adapter will tell the tale.

The last pic shows where the output shaft would bottom out the the adapter. The short output is even shorter than I remembered. To use this adapter/t-case behind a 700r4, not only do you need the spacer, but you have to trim the shaft down a bit too.

I've never seen the shorter shaft of all the Th350's I rebuilt. I guess they were all NP203's. I never paid much attention to the Tcases, but I know they were fuggin cast iron, and in Squares. I only knew of 4 shafts and only 1 of them is for 4x4. Guess you learn something new everyday. BUT, that is ridiculous that adapter bottoms out so quick. I dunno. I'll see if I can find a NP205 from a Th350 and play with it.

The 205 and the 203 both take the same output shaft (on a th350). The 203 adapter is REALLY thin because it doesn't use the coupler like the 205.

You can unbolt the 203 and adapter, then bolt on the 205 and adapter.

That would make sense then. So there is ONLY 1 size Th350 4x4 output shaft, apparently it's just shorter than the 700r4 shaft, but still long enough it fits the NP208 too.

Lol, no... that's what I've been trying to say this whole time. There are two different 4x4 outputs, '80 and earlier, then '81 and up (which is not common these days and was used with the np208).

The 208 won't work on the older model th350 (output way too short), and the 203/205 won't bolt up to the 700r4 without the spacer and a trim off the end of the output.
