Truck won’t start

I spent a few days running vacuum lines and changed out old hoses such as heater, pcv, brake booster. Also cleaned the engine bay up a little while I was running new lines. None of these lines should affect starting. I’m not sure If I disconnected something I wasn’t supposed to or what.

I have plenty of fuel, I can hit the throttle by hand and see squirts in the carb. New battery, so that isn’t the issue. The single wire plug in the picture was not connected. I’m not sure if it goes there, but it has 12V ign hot.

I did a spark test by laying the plug and wire on the grounded block, no spark.

That gray wire I THINK is your Tach wire. Where is the 12v wire for the distributor? I don't see that.

That gray wire I THINK is your Tach wire. Where is the 12v wire for the distributor? I don't see that.

I was assuming that was for my distributor. I don’t have a tach, I have it connected to +bat on the cap.

It should be a red wire, and they are usually a heavier gauge than that one.

Does that wire have 12v with the ignition turned on?

That is a little strange, but if that's the wire you've been using, it must have been working fine. If it checks out while cranking, I'd take the ignition control module to Autozone to be tested. Is this a really low mileage truck? I'm 99% sure those are the plug wires GM used from the factory back then.

Oh, and if you have to replace the ICM, get an AC Delco. The cheap ones are only worthwhile as spares if you get stranded. They are much cheaper online, and they seem to be special order only in the stores now, at least the ones I've been in.

Those are NAPA's higher end wires.

The factory wires were black/charcoal and said Packard on them. They were numbered by cylinder too.

Also, you need to check for spark they way I suggested with a screwdriver. Well, a spark tester is easier, but not everyone has one of those.

It drops to 7V when I crank it. The thing is idk if it was the wire that was on there. But it’s the only wire I see that could go there.

Huh, that ‘89 Caprice that I have has those wires on them, and it’s got 22K miles. Makes me wonder why they were changed.

Had coil and ignition control tested, both are good.

I’m going to jump a wire straight from battery to the terminal on distributor, if it fires up I know what’s wrong with it.
